Shaq Says He won't Retire Early - Link
Shaquille O'Neal again indicated on Thursday that he will not retire before his contract expires at the end of the 2009-2010 season, the Miami Herald is reporting.
In an interview Thursday, ESPN Radio's Jack Ramsay told O'Neal, ``I don't hear retirement in your voice.''
Responded O'Neal: ``No, never that. I am the son of an army drill sergeant, and when we enlist, we go full term. So I've got two years left on my term, and after that, I'll be looking to do other things.

Shaq doesn't want to leave the NBA. He just wants to keep playing, that's all.

shaq has had an injury plagued season, where he has underperformed. not the way superman wants to be remembered. so he wants to at least get healthy, so he can resemble the player he used to be. i dont blame him

So the Heat will suck for a very long time, news to me. Shaq's pride will drive that franchise to the ground, the amount of cap space his salary is occupying will render that team paralyzed and unable to acquire pieces to be competitive until his contract is up. Well they won a championship with him but now are paying the price of acquiring a severely declining and deteriorating athlete.

If he retires, he doesn't get the money. Otherwise, some players might just retire now and never play again.

I don't think money is the motivation since O'Neal should still have plenty left from advertisements and such.

A price well worth it, but even if Shaq were to retire right now, and it weren't due to a career ending injury, we'd be on the hook for his full salary anyways. Hell, even if it were due to a career ending injury, it would only get us out of his salary a couple of months early.
The only harm he's doing by playing is to his legacy. Either way, Miami is crippled by his contract...

Riley's plan had nothing to do with Shaq retiring, nor would Shaq's retirement effect our cap space.
