My friend and I were discussing about some possibilities. One that arose was a march madness style tournament to determine the first pick and second while the others would be determined by the lottery. I'm kinda fifty fifty on this but I wanna hear some thoughts

i think it sucks and that no one will watch garbage teams play it.


besides, the teams that barely missed the playoffs would most likely get the first and second seeds

Dont be surprised to see this lineup tomorrow with Haslem getting injured and Wade having the flu.

intriguing idea. and i guarantee people would watch a game to determine who gets the #1 pick. would get better ratings than any spurs finals game would ever get.

of course, me picking my nose on PBS would get better ratings than a spurs finals game...

A team that just barely misses the playoffs would probably whoop on a team in full rebuilding mode like Seattle, so is it really fair to reward that team that just missed the playoffs and didn't suck as bad as Seattle with a top pick when Seattle legitimately sucked all year long (I'm just using Seattle as an example ;=D)?

this is true, but isnt the lottery equally arbitrary?

I think that all teams who miss the playoffs should get an equal chance.

Hey, that 7.1% chance is bigger than Portland had to get the number 1.

Eh but the way the lottery is weighted in such a way that a team that barely misses the playoff has such a small chance of getting the 1st overall pick, just look at the "Process" section:

Give the 4th, 5th, and 6th worst teams the most balls followed by 1-3. The worst teams still get great picks, but you gotta try at least a little to have the best shot. Give teams an incentive to avoid being the worst team and they'll win games.

no the draft is definitely not equally arbiturary, anyone who thinks so obviously has not watched a draft before.

Have an additional playoffs. The 4 worst teams in the leauge have a playoff for who gets the 1st pick, and the team with the best record gets HCA. Break the next group off into another bracket. Give the picks out that way because I feel bad for teams that are actually trying to get into the playoffs and just fail, but are punished for trying by not really having any chance at improving through the draft.

I remember a couple years ago the Texans and 49ers were playing horribly, and if both teams had identically horrible records they would play and the loser would get the 1st pick. I don't think they had to do that, but I thought the NFL should have given the pick to the winner if the game had been played.

Who cares, let the bottom 5 teams try and fight for the worst spot. I don't think it's gonna make a whole lot of difference in watchability if they don't tank.

Well for starters they should use the lottery to determine the entire first 14 picks, not just 1-3. Would increase the chances of the worst teams (those that tank) of getting a bad pick and increase the chances of the teams that actually tried (just missed the playoffs) of getting a better pick.

Not much, if anything, that the NBA can do. The worst teams need the best talent, if they tank, so be it. It 'aint ethical, but ethics don't seem to have a place in the NBA...

Give the worst 6 teams an equal number of ping pong balls. That doesn't eliminate tanking completely, as #7 and #8 will probably tank a bit to fall into the bottom 6, but it stops hardcore tanking to have "the best shot" at the #1 pick.

This is a terrible idea. YOu would get teams tanking to miss the playoffs.

You think Orlando would have rather got swept by Detroit last year or missed the playoffs to play for the #1 pick to add Oden next to Dwight?

The best thing to do would be to change it back to the way it was.

From worst to best record, start with 14 balls and go to 1. Then pick all 14 spots using the lottery system.

As a Memphis fan, I can say the only way to stop tanking is to tank and then get burned by the current system - you'll never want to tank again.
