All Joe Johnson does is score, Josh plays D efficiently and highlu underrated passing.

defense? Neither does Melo, or 33% of the other Fran plyers.

Joe Johnson also passes, handles the ball, defends, and rebounds. Can play 3 positions.

More than just a scorer for sure.

Josh Smith isn't the jumpshooter Johnson is.

Joe Johnson has a great all-around game and Al Horford is an emerging beast. Future-wise at least (he's second for now), Josh Smith is a third banana there imo.

I think you are somewhat overrating Horford...

Not saying that there are no chances that he will end-up to be the better player but Horford is just one year younger than Josh Smith who is waaaaaaaaay better at the moment..

I don't know if this makes him a "franchise" player but he is playing much better than JJ this year....

There's no way Josh Smith should be a franchise player on any team. He's a glorified Gerald Wallace, even if you want to argue that Smith is better than Wallace I'll go ahead and grant that, but you guys can't be serious Smith can not single handidly lead his team to wins time and time again. He's a very good player but not one you can build an entire team around, he's just a piece to the puzzle...

because he on averages 18.1 a game which is good but not franchise worthy. to be a franchise player you have get 20 a night IMO. its much easier o build a franchise around a athletic player than it is a unathletic player(unless your tim duncan, kidd or etc). if he can get his scoring up to 23 points a night then maybe. i think he can be a vince carter, paul pierce, ray allen type players in which he gets his team to the playoffs just not to a championship.

if atlanta dont resign that man then i will stop watching haw games.

Because he has a brain the size of a walnut and has a short fuse. He's extremely talented and really good but he doesn't have the attitude of a franchise player. Hell of a player though.

He needs to improve his shooting and they need to make him SF.

He won't be a franchise player but he'll be a piece

I don't believe it's possible to be a franchise player, unless you can put the ball in the basket at an efficient rate and/or have great playmaking ability..Josh Smith is a great defender, great finisher, but he isn't suited to be a #1 option..he isn't on that level yet..he's more of a Marion type of player to other stars RIGHT NOW..

There are some very misleading posts on this thread. Firstly, Smoove is a much more efficient offensive player. Look at his game log since mid December and you will see he has been shooting more like 47% after a bad start.

As for the "short fuse" and "stupid" comments that is insane. He is one of the hardest workers in the league and leaves it on the floor every single night. If he goes off every now and then because of it I can live with that.

Also, he is only 22 years old. Many of you are forgetting that. So the low ppg argument isn't fair. He's going to keep getting better and be an elite player.

Josh Smith IS the franchise player in Atlanta. You will see that when he signs his contract this summer.

He isn't the #1 option because he doesn't have half the offensive game that Joe has. A healthy Joe = an All Star. (well, even an injured Joe got the All Star nod this year)

False.

Not from what I've heard and seen. I guess he's inconsistent because of his offensive role, but he's a capable, better than average defender.

True. Some people just have the last several games stuck in their minds because he hasn't had any explosion/quickness due to his injury.

Atlanta is ONE player away from being ONE player away. That is why Josh Smith isn't and will never be a franchise player.
