NBA All-Star Game: Is New Orleans Ready?

So I found this great article about New Orleans and how the NBA has taken huge steps to play a major role in the rebuilding effort.

And the whole horrific Las Vegas deal from last year is still sticking in my mind. And then I remembered all of the players and fans that were scared to death about the possibility of it happening again in New Orleans this year. So does anyone know how New Orleans is and what steps are being taken to make sure we don't have another Vegas situation?

I just haven't heard the complaints from players recently. Any live down there or is anyone planning on attending?

hope new orleans gets alot of money from the event, it should help with the rebuilding.

Nowhere near ready. But the city needs this. Good job by the NBA going in as soon as they could.

The areas where people will be are very much ready. The city just handled another huge Mardi Gras successfully. Matter of factly they've held a few big events since the hurricane successfully. Billy Hunter addressed this with the players a long time ago. A lot of planning goes into an NBA All-Star game. League meets with city officials, police, etc. McGrady was the main one trying to make a stink about it. He will not be missed in New Orleans. Unless the game is being played in some of the hardest hit residential areas, which it is not, the city is ready. Just don't go to strip clubs if you hear Pac Man will be there.

"I've done a lot of stuff in New Orleans as it is, I'm looking forward to doing some more," Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant said earlier this week. "But that's one of the places that I've really been active in. It's something else for us to do in New Orleans."

But seriously, I can see where people would have concerns but it's just like every thing/place else. Don't put yourself in certain situations.

Most people don't know what the hell they are talking about.

We'll be fine. We've held huge conventions, the BCS National Championship Game and Mardi Gras. The areas that any tourists will be in were pretty much in tact from K.

New Orleans is used to holding these events. Very, very used to it.

It's not going to be any more chaotic than a game, and certainly not even close to the magnitude of Mardi Gras.

i think people who haven't been there in the past 3 years generally don't know.

-the tourist areas are fine. most of them were fine months after Katrina.

-the game is not being played in the 9th ward. all of this fear is the equivalent of people being scared of an allstar game in Philadelphia because of Camden or people being scared to play in Staples Center because of Compton.

-since Katrina the city has hosted events that are 20x larger than an NBA AllStar game. the BCS Championship, Mardi Gras, Saints games, a few LSU games, etc. If they can handle hundreds of thousands of tourists roaming the streets drunk then they can handle 18,000 fans outside of the arena.
