The 9th seed out west has a better record than the 3rd seed in the East (Orland Magic). This has gotten out of control!

And there is a good chance (25%) that the Spurs may miss the playoff entirely! They have a tough schedule compared to Denver and Houston the rest of the way and have a worse record vs team over .500 compare to the other three teams. And they are 2 and half game away from the 9th place.
The west is simply incredible this year. A 5 game losing streak would get you in the lottery for any of the top 8 seeds now!

Denver most likely would be in the 9th place come all-star time. Imagine that! A team with 3 all-stars!

I'm pretty sure that the Spurs will make the playoffs.

not saying that one conference is better then the other but just to point out, there are more teams with 30+ wins in the southwest division alone then the entire eastern conference

For one, why is Denver "most likely" to be the 9th seed at the all-star break? They're currently 7th and play Miami tomorrow. They have as much of a chance of being 4th at the break as they do being 9th.
Secondly, Denver doesn't have three all-stars, they have two(neither of which were picked by the coaches).
Thirdly, love the thread. Very original.

Whoever invented this idea of Eastern Conference / Western Conference was probably a short sighted idiot.

Not really, because back in the day teams didn't have charter flights etc., so traveling was a lot harder on both the players and the staff. Hence the reason they played more games against teams with shorter traveling distance to.

It's great to be in the Eastern Conference. Your team will probably be in the playoffs unless your favorite team is the Knicks or Heat.
Meanwhile, your team can be 11 or 12 games above .500 in the West and yet you're nowhere near the playoffs.

Except every American sport has some variation of it, and it works around 95% of the time perfectly well.
It's sad, theoretically the East should be bringing back the balance, with all their high draft picks. But the management in the East is so much weaker they just can't catch up.
Someday. But with Durant and Oden in the West, not in the next few years.

That really sucks for a western conference team that they can be TEN games over .500 and STILL not make the playoffs. WOW
