(Per ESPN report)

Topic updated to lessen confusion. As others have posted below, he's opting to play through the injury.

I edited your topic title, since it was pretty misleading. This should make it clear that he is NOT having the surgery.

Kobe Bryant has sustained a torn ligament in his right pinkie and has decided not to undergo surgery that would sideline him for six weeks, the Lakers said today.

Bryant initially hurt his finger Feb. 5 when the Lakers played New Jersey. The injury was originally listed as a dislocated pinkie, although the team revealed today there was also a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and an avulsion fracture, in which a small fragment of bone had been pulled off by a tendon.

Bryant, who saw hand specialist Steven Shin in Los Angeles today, will try to play through the injury instead of having surgery. If he opted for surgery, he would face a six-week recovery process."My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days, and hope I can still continue to compete at a high level after that rest," Bryant said in a statement. "I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer's Olympic Games. But, this is an injury that myself and the Lakers' medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis."

Thanks for the clarification. Heard it was a torn ligament in the finger.

Well I think it is pretty clear that Kobe is going to opt out of the ASG now.

Even if he plays , what i fear is that its going to affect his shooting , ugh why does something bad happen to the lakers when everything seems so good , first bynum , now this...

Kobe has been playing well with the injury. I think he has averaged 30+ points in the last 4 games.

They said he "aggravated" it in the last game -- looks like that's when the complete tear happened.

Because that's what winners do, they go through tough stretches, Lakers will at least get to the WC Finals, if Kobe had gotten surgery, that could actually take the Lakers OUT of the playoffs.

This is a new injury.

Lats time (vs New Jerey I think) it was dislocated finger. Now he tore the ligament in it.

Thats true , and we all know that kobe wants to win more then anyone else out there , but what im trying to say that this is still real bad news and it can turn out to be even a worse news if it affects kobes shooting.

Not like theres a good timing for a injury like this , but atleast it happened at the best time possible ( all-star break )

Wait, Lebron sprained his finger and he was out for 6 games, and Kobe dislocates his finger (although it's his pinky) & has a torn ligament now in it and he will still play the season out.

Tell me again who the best player is? :-?

man the Lakes are cursed...just when you think they are turning around forming one of the best teams in the league, they get side swiped...

well i'm sure he'll be back sooner...probably around the same time as Bynum...

(too bad this couldn't have happened before the Magic game)

get well Kobes...
