One thing to learn from me is that everything I've ever done has been me, not something that someone calculated me to be. It goes to my upbringing, my parents. I didn't grow up in the inner city. I grew up in a rural area, where values were magnified. You were taught how to operate in society, to be articulate, honest. Kids growing up in the city, they're more materialistic. My kids are going through that now.
It's a tough task for the league to create a similar image for itself. It has to find the right mix between corporate and street, believe in what it's doing and live with whatever the response may be. Too many of the league's decisions are made based on the bottom line. People pick up on that. You can't be afraid to fail. The stars you have now might not live up to the icon of a Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson, but maybe they will create an image that delivers an impact for you 10, 15 years from now.

You think it would be a complement to MJ that players want imitate his game. Seriously though, if you're a young guy comming up, you want to look at what the best players in the league have done to be so damn good and use it. Having that been said, I read the entire article and he never says "stop copying legends".

I agree with him. Create your own style and that's partly the media's fault.
Stop saying this is the next MJ, the next Magic, the next Big O, and let these guys establish their own legacy.
You can hardly enjoy watching them without some nut sucking announcer making some dumb comparison.

everything "great" or cool or stylish gets copied 1000x over.

Wow it's funny how 2 people can read the same quotes and think something completely opposite. One guy was thinking those words pertain to Kobe, while I was thinking it was directed to the players who are still trying to establish themselves in the league. Whether you dislike Kobe or not, he's already among the all-time greats.
Just today on the radio, Kareem Abdul Jabbar said Kobe is the greatest "shotmaker" he's ever seen in his life. And this was just after he finished talking about guys like Oscar Robertson. He even mentioned how Kobe has longer range than Jordan, but Jordan played from about 25 feet and in. Kobe and Jordan's styles on the court really aren't THAT similar. MJ played like a SG/SF while Kobe is more of a pure SG.
Kareem is not the first all-time great to mention Kobe as one of the greats. Just the most recent (I was driving home from work).
