The Mid-Air Tap will Revolutionize the Dunk Contest

Post#1 » by maltonwala » Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:34 pm

In this years dunk contest, for his 3rd dunk, Dwight Howard threw the ball in the air, jumped, tapped it off the backboard in mid air and dunked the ball.

Due to the fact it's really hard for players nowadays to come up with dunks that have never done before, players will now incorporate the mid air tap into their dunks.

Imagine this, a player throws the ball up in the air, jumps, taps it off the backboard (ala Dwight Howard) and does a windmill, a 360 or even a through the legs dunk.

That is something extremely difficult to do and only with players with ridiculous hang time will be able to do it. And in my opinion, that is what's in store for NBA fans for years to come.

In case anyone doesn't know what dunk I'm talking about, here it is:

Wouldn't surprise me. I think that 3rd dunk is being overlooked a lot because of the Superman one, but the fact is it was an amazing dunk.

It also will be more difficult since you have to throw a lob at the right place. You have to lob the ball so that it bounces up vertically and not moving towards the backboard. It's crazy how the creativity in dunk contests keep getting better and better over time.

That mid-air tap dunk was better than the Superman dunk actually.

I think you are right. Just as carter brought the through the legs out, howard opened up the gates for this dunk.

So true... I tried to find it on youtube, but that's almost impossible. All I found was Superman, even some dunk contest summaries left that one out. :nonono:

That was my favorite dunk out of the entire night. I'm not impressed with dunks that relies on props.

Isiah Rider was the first to do it in the dunk contest. Kobe was the second.

I actually thought he did the mid air tap dunk better in his preview before the dunk contest than the one he did in the contest itself.

Orlando Woolridge was actually the first, he did it way back in 1984... no-one did it between then and Rider.

It will. For Dwight, it looked too easy. But the 6'6 guys, if they can pull that off and some fancy finish along with it, you'd have one of the best dunks in history.

Gerald Green and J-Rich would be able to do it. The ball was bouncing UP towards Vince Carter which made it easy for him to get it and put it between the legs.

Jason Richardson bounced it off the backboard and as the ball came DOWN against him, he caught it and put it between the legs.

The dunk will look really plain in 4 or so years. Right now it's amazing since none of us have ever seen a dunk like that before. But once people start making it more complicated and have more variations for it it will be incredible.

Just like Spud Webb's "off the floor then off the backboard" dunk back in the day. We were all amazed by that dunk then, but when we look back at it now it looks plain.
