Your top 5 favorite contest dunks (all-time)?

Post#1 » by dingclancy » Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:22 am

I'll rank mine based on shock factor right after I saw the dunk.

1. Jason Richardson's lob bounce between the legs reverse dunk
2. Richardson's off the backboard between the legs
3. Iggy's behind the backboard
4. Howard's Superman
5. Mason's left handed between the legs

My favorite is still Michael Jordan's iconic dunk from the free throw line. It is not as athletically amazing now as it was back then, but it was beautiful and graceful (especially in slow motion).

Such an overrated dunk.

1. Vince Carter (Reverse 360 Windmill)

Why #1? Because he had perfect body rotation, and perfect arm motion.

2. Jason Richardson (Lob Off Backboard Between The Legs)
3. Dominique Wilkins (Full Rotation Windmill)
4. Jason Richardson (Lob Reverse Baseline Between Legs)
5. Dwight Howard (Superman) Although it wasn't a dunk IMO, it was still unique and innovative.

Yeah, too bad your boy kobe cant do it.

For me, all of the dunks during the MJ vs Nique '88 contest, Vince' domination and this year's Dwight Howard's tap the board dunk.

I think if we are talking about dunk competition. jrich's sideline dunk tops any dunk. and then VC's dunk in 2000. then jrich's backboard dunk. in game dunk however, vince carter over fred weis is by far the best.

Jordan vs Nique because it was competitive till the end. Dee Brown vs Shawn Kemp was another one.

Good list. Vince's 360 windmill dunk is in my top 3.

agree with everything but 4/5
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

You mean DR. J's Iconic Dunk. Dr. J will always be associated with the FT dunk.

Every FT line dunk i've seen the dunker always steps on the line. I think Brent Barry was the closest to it though.

Hard to do top 5 but i'll throw in...
1. VC Elbow Dunk (never saw anything like that before, showmanship without props, that's how it's done)

2. Dr. J FT Link Dunk (again not seen before & often imitated. It's almost a requirement to be able to do this to be considered a true dunker)

3. VC reverse 360 Windmill (he basically did two of Dominique Wilkens moves and combined them into one grace & power)

4. MJ Sideways dunk (looked graceful & I really don't see many guys doing this or variations of this)

5. J.R. Rider between the legs (I can't recall previous slam dunk contestants going between the legs so I think this is the original - others have done it better since but credit for originality)

honourable mentions:
Harold Miner reverse between the legs pump jam
Kenny Skywalker 360
Jason Richardson between the legs left handed dunk
any numerous Dominque Wilkens windmills

I wish VC would have entered more dunk contests in his youth since he said he had stuff people hadn't seen before and I'm pretty sure he could have pulled off a 720.

1. VC's elbow dunk
2. JRich lob reverse btwn the legs
3. VC's 360 windmill
4. Dwight Howard's tap off the backboard
5. Nate Robinson over Spud Webb

also up there- jrich off the backboard btwn the legs, dwight's superman dunk, JR Smith behind the back(very underrated IMO) gerald green's birthday cake(a lot of guys can probably do it but it was creative), MJ's sideways dunk, Dr J free throw line, VC bounce btwn the legs, Nique's windmills, Josh Smith over Kenyon Martin, Steve Francis alley oop to himself where he reached way back,

You really cant compare dunks from 10 yrs ago and recent years. There never has been a player as tall and athletically gifted as Dwight.

But to answere the question I will go with the Superman as I have never seen anything like what he did.

I'm not done reading the thread on this (it's 30 freakin pages), but I still don't get why people are listing this. It was his worst dunk of the night. Merely props and an ordinary dunk where he didn't even reach the rim.

People are so freaked out that he was wearing a cape. ???

Anyway, my list would be the 4 dunks VC pulled off in the 2000 competition + his dunk over Frederic Weiss (sp?) during the Olympics. I don't care if that was during a dunk comp or not.

Anyone who doesn't have Iggy's leap from behind the board out of bounds has a flawed list. It's the most ridiculous thing that's ever happened in a dunk contest.

1. Iggy's behind the board
2-5. changes daily.
A witty saying proves nothing.

Except the fact that Dwight just did an even more impressive version of it for his first dunk...

1. J-Rich's between the legs
2. MJ's FT-line dunk
3. Dwight's off-the-backboard
4. SUPERMAN
5. Spud Webb

the superman was awful.. jordan may as well leaped from the 3pt line and threw the ball into the hoop, fact is if anyone aside from dwight(or another superstar) threw the ball into the hoop, everyone would be ripping on him and calling it a layup.. his other dunks were nice though

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPwsN2gmUMM&NR=1 every dunk in there but the second to last with kiss the rim (at 20s) being my fav..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpGcjaG4MUU isiah ryders at 1:16 (not the between legs) and antonio mcdyess's at 1:28 is serious 2hand 360 pump

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2PISpRppuI nates first dunk in '07 (not the spud, year later, first one in spincam video, unreal)

harold miner had some sick ones, too many dunks to choose

More impressive? He didn't even bring his head around the board. Iggy basically did the dunk blind. Dwight's such a freak that he didn't have to go around, he just went and did a regular windmill with his arms extended out a little bit more.

1. VC's Reverse 360 Windmill: The epitome of grace and power.
2. J-Rich's Reverse Through The Legs: Everthing was backwards about this dunk, he went through the legs in reverse, jammed it reverse. An awesome dunk.
3. Skywalker's 360 One-Hand Windmill: This man was a freak.
4. Iguodala's Behind-the-Board: I express my glee above.
5. Dr. J's Free Throw Line Dunk: I'm bias because I like dunks to have force and power, but I still give this one a nod over Wilken's dunks simply because everyone and their mother has tried this dunk now.

i dont understand why the superman dunk is getting so much hype ..he just jumped high and threw it in ... the tap off the backboard and dunk with the other hand was much better then superman but because he didnt wear a cape for the dunk ppl talking about superman lol
