How often will Shaq get his jersey retired?

Post#1 » by Point forward » Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:13 pm

Up to now, he has been a Magic, a Laker, a Heat and a Sun.

* Turned the Magic from laughingstock to NBA Finalist, where Shaq was the only guy who showed up vs Hakeem and Co. But left on a bitter note.

* He was key player on the threepeat Lakers, MVP and triple Finals MVP. But also had his very public spat vs Kobe. Still disliked by many Lakers fans.

* He was almost-MVP with the Heat and an important (but not #1) reason why the Heat won the ring. But only stayed there 3.5 years.

* Now, the Suns.

How often will Shaq get his jersey retired? All 4 times? (IMHO this would be unique, 4 retired NBA jerseys, that is why I am asking)

He would've had his jersey retired by the heat even if he had never played for them ala Jordan

Definitely three are guaranteed for now. His future with Phoenix is in doubt. For all we know he could end up like Moses Malone did in Atlanta.

I think it will only be in LA. He spent the most time there, won 3 rings and had 3 finals mvp along with a regular season mvp.

I don't think the Magic will do it because he left on a sour note and I doubt the Heat will since he didn't exactly leave on the best of terms with Pat Riley (Who has an ownership stake in the Heat). Phoenix may do it but that is up in the air and I don't see it happening even if he does win a ring in phoenix.

He had a great career in Orlando.. Took the team to the finals. He put Orlando Magic on the map in the early 90s. He had a bigger impact in Orlando than he did in Miami, imo.

LOCKS
Lakers - no brainer.
Heat - if they can retire Michael Jordan's jersey for contributions to the league, they can retire Shaq's for helping win their first title.

OUTSIDE CHANCE
Magic - Doubtful, but considering Shaq is going to retire to the Orlando area, he might be able to rebuild his relationship with the organization.

NO CHANCE
Suns - even with a title, he's just not playing up to the level required to earn such an honor.

Lakers are the only guaranteed retired jersey.

I think he has a good chance at getting his jersey retired in Miami, but I would not guarantee it, it all depends on how Management thinks about him. They also would probably retire Zo and maybe even Hardaway before Shaq.

I really don't think they will retire his jersey in Orlando. He did not leave on the best terms, and although he was great, I don't know if one finals appearance is enough to get his jersey retired.

And in Phoenix, no one knows. Only time will tell.

Lakers for sure

The Heat and Magic should retire his.

If he can win a title in Phoenix then he should get it retired there.

All the Burger Kings in Miami retired the #11 Quadruple Stacker Meal in honor of Snaq. Does that count?
“[Your English] depends on where you start in the NBA,” said Nesterovic. “I started in Minnesota, he [Brezec] started in Indiana. That’s a pretty tough organization to pick up English.”
