2008 NBA all star game down 16%
2007 NBA Champioship series average only 6.1 rating

what is going on?

Basketball is behind auto racing and hockey?

It's racism. Seriously, go read Bill Simmon's All-Star article. It's racism. The NBA could be picture-perfect but nobody would watch it. Hell, Pacman Jones(NFL player) screwed up the ASG in Las Vegas, but guess who got the blame.

were pretty close to electing an african-american president.

the nfl is nearly 80% black

I don't buy the racism arguement

Yeah but for some reason the stereotype for blacks in the NFL isn't as strong as blacks in basketball.

The NBA made a gigantic mistake when it promoted this whole hip-hop image. The NBA still has a very bad habit of choosing to give air time to players that can barely even speak English.

Look at some of the post-game interviews and it's laughable.

There are many players in the league that could be promoted that would have given the NBA a much better image, but instead they market to just one target group which is generally young males.

The truth is the other sports market across a much broader spectrum. Most people don't care to see some idiot who thinks he can rap doing "his thing" with all his tattoos all over his body and sounding like some idiot when he gives an interview, acting like a jack ass during games yelling out to his "boys", etc.

The NBA is obviously completely clueless on this aspect.

Real basketball fans are interested in the GAME, not some stupid idiots.

Give some examples of bad people they do give air time to to and good guys they SHOULD give air time too.

When did they market a hip hop image anyway? All I see I love this game and where amazing happens or NBA cares.

to me the player that has done the most damage to the sport is hands down allen iverson.

yes he's not a thug. but he looks like one. has anybody been talking about the NBA and somebody comment "they don't practice"?

You're crazy if you think the NBA is promoting the hip-hop image. Stern has been trying to clean up the NBA's image for years, its probably his biggest concern.

The NBA has suffered because of the lack of big market teams in the playoffs. The NBA did fine post Jordan with the Lakers carrying the league interest. Ever since Shaq left LA the major markets haven't been invloved in the deeper rounds of the playoffs. As a result normal Americans dont have a compelling interest to watch the latter round of the playoffs.

Last year this was especially true. Once you got to the conference finals the majority of America tuned out because the only teams left were Cle, Det, Utah, And san Antonio. This year ratings should not be an issue as Boston and LA expect to go deep into the playoffs. Basically from a business standpoint you don't want major markets tuning out of the playoffs. People from Bos and LA couldnt care less about SA or Cle. I can guarantee you however if either of those teams are in the finals you will see sky high ratings.

the Celtics and Lakers are 2 of the best teams in the NBA..the West is absolutely loaded..if the NBA doesn't get good ratings THIS YEAR, then we should be worried..

and there is no way the NHL has better ratings..I don't even know what channel it's on, and their finals got about a 2 rating in the US IIRC..Canada is obviously different..

Nascar has always been popular..

The NBA is more boring than it was in the past. I blame the officiating more than anything else. For some reason, I'd rather watch the olympics than this.
