(Mods dont lock it. The youtube thread is kind of lame since its view traffic is so abysmal)

This is for those clowns who you always see around the general board or offtopic forum saying stuff like "I made 50/100 shots, I'd be shooting at least 40% in the nba"

This is what NBA shooters do when no one is guarding them

3-point line

Yeah people don't understand... Most good shooters make like 80-85% of their shoots when their in a gym by themselves or in practice. I remember reading a story from DraftNet saying Adam Morrision made like 165 out of 175 shoots from 15-23feet in the pre-draft.

And Mike is shooting from the 3 point line.

Miller's stroke is classic and effortless. That's an interesting angle to view the mechanics from too, you can see the the full motion as if it was you who were shooting. The release, extension and wrist snap is a thing of beauty. So smooth.

Miller is sexy as hell too.

I agree with you, but I don't understand what's the point of the video.
Mike Miller is one of the best shooters in the NBA. If you showed me someone who everyone considers to have an average to bad jumpshot knocking down 3s or even midrangers consistently in practice, I'd say you have a point. That even guys considered bad shooters in the NBA can knock down more than 50% of their jumpers in practice. This video just shows me that Mike Miller is a great shooter, which anyone who has seen him play already knew.

I said "This is what NBA shooters do". I did'nt say "This is what NBA players do". Your not considered a "shooter" in the nba if your only average or below average.

DeShawn is an "average" shooter you could say. Watch how many he makes. Gilbert goes 73/100 using one hand. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn6O42a5vl8

Reminds me of when Flyin' Ryan Bowen used to be a Rocket. Bill Worrell (Rockets announcer) would always talk about how he rarely missed his jumpers during shootaround and would drain shot after shot. It was nearly impossible to believe because Ryan Bowen couldn't hit a wide open baseline jumper to save his life.

This is an eye-opening thread for me. I can make about ~45% from the 3 point line in practice with no one guarding me. But in games I'm really only about a 30% shooter.

It's funny how all the little things lower a guys shooting percentage from practice to a game.

1) Defense: Those are wide open shots. A lot of Mike's threes are relatively clear anyway, but a lot of them are contested to at least some degree. Even some of his shots are contested to the slightest degree, that will lower his percentage.

2) Visual Distraction: Those practice takes are done with no crowd, no defense, no waving arms, no players racing across the court etc. There are a lot of things that might negatively effect the shot just based on what they see.

3) Audio Distraction: The video is done in a silent gym with no sound diversion. In a real game you have a blaring crowd cheering and yelling, squeaks on the floor from players shoes, guys shouting plays and calls for you. A real game is far from a quit getaway.

4) Game Situation: Although you might get open looks in the NBA, they are very rarely ones where you are just standing still and someone feeds you the ball. In an actual game you gotta run across a screen to find space, receive the pass and you have maybe 1-2 seconds to fire off the shot before it will be blocked. In theory from a stance of distance/how open you are it is the same shot. But in a game environment with your heart racing, legs tired all the while knowing you only have a limited time to launch the shot (ie. not standing there casually launching 3's) it can make it very tough.

Good points.
Also don't forget fatigue factor. Sore muscles + out of breath makes your form sloppy.

It makes me wonder if there are role players who play like superstars during practice but can't get it done in a game. I heard that Mateen Cleaves used to beat Mike Bibby and Bobby Jackson in one on ones when they played on the Kings together.

I've seen that one. Really impressive too. What I'm saying is that anyone that says "I made 50/100 shots, I'd be shooting at least 40% in the nba", taking aside the fact that they're dellusional, I don't think they're comparing themselves to NBA shooters. I think most people know that a nba shooter can shoot a lot better than 50% in practice. They're just saying they can shoot better than some of the worst shooters in the league.
