based on impact on the floor or on hype? If hype, you can look at jersey sales and the like (if you mean in the USA then you can discount the Yao/Yi factor)

If LeBron James is not a superstar then there are no superstars in the NBA.

If you dont consider him a superstar or a "tier 1" superstar, you simply have no business being on an NBA forum.

Wake up people...LeBron James is for real. He is not the "star of the future" he is the star of today.

I'm not gonna list mine in popularity..Yao Ming is #1, easily ahead of anybody else if this is about marketing, hype and popularity..it's a completely different list..

superstars on the court..

Lebron, Duncan, Kobe, Garnett, Wade(when healthy and not tanking), Nash, Paul, Howard, Nowitzki, Howard..

I only consider these guys "superstars":

Tim Duncan
Kobe Bryant
LeBron James
Kevin Garnett
Dwayne Wade (*)
Deron Williams
Chris Paul (**)
Dwight Howard (**)
Steve Nash (though some decrease may be creeping up)

*: Not exactly this season, but I think he'll get back to better form when he's healthy next season, along with a better team.

**: He'll have playoff success (going farther than round 1), and added onto that, quite possibly win the MVP.

Yao needs to have playoff success before I can consider him an overall superstar. Obviously has it with his game and off the court, but the substantial success hasn't been there yet. That's questionable to me with the western conference, and then depending how the Rockets are going to be set up.

Shaq is still a supersstar in terms of personality and off the court, but since 06, on the court he's not been a superstar.

Everybody else is a certain level of all-star player, in the way of 2nd tier, 3rd-tier star players.

Duncan should be on everybody's 1st-tier. Doesn't have the flash or the off-court attention, but that isn't ultimately what matters primarily, his on the court effect, skill, establishment, and success is great.

Is this serious? How did you put Kidd on there and not put in the most visible and statistically impressive player in the league (not to mention a guy that is single handidly leading his team into the playoffs)? You just can't make a list of superstars and leave Ty Lue off.

Except you're missing Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.

Flash and off the court popularity isn't what's most important for a superstar player. On the court ability, impact, success, and establishment is what matters most.

Yao
Melo
Chris Paul

Stars:
Kidd - lost a step
Nash - Lost a step
Deron Williams- Almost a super star
Tracy Mac - Never does anything in postseason; getting old
Shaq - In name only. There are many who are better.
Bosh - Needs to win in post-season to move up.
Boozer - Damn close to next level
Billups - Should be in next level
Arenas - Hype? or the real deal?
Baron Davis - Should be in next level
Elton Brand - Playing for Clippers and injuries put him down here.
Amare - Close to next level
Marion - Probably a true Super-Star, but he hurts himself.
Artest - See above
Bibby - Losing a step, may not deserve to be here.
Kevin Martin - Starting to show that he will be a force to recon with.
Al Jefferson - see above
A.I. - Probably deserves to be higher, but Melo takes spotlight.
Pierce - Probably deserves to be higher.
Ray Allen - See above; Both Ray and Pierce get shadowed by KG
Bynum - May not deserve this yet, but he is so close, I added him.
Al Horford - Only Rookie that looks like he will be a top-10 player
Joe Johnson - May deserve more than this, but Atlanta keeps him here
Rip Hamilton - Under-rated, and deserves this, or better.
Brandon Roy - May be one of the most under-rated players in NBA
