A friend sent me this story from the LA Times. A pretty interesting look at why Kobe is the Barry Bonds of the NBA. The stat that jumped out at me is that according to ad agencies only Artest is more dis-liked by the general public.

And the fact that he f***s up every team he plays

Colorado incident put a detrimental mark on Kobe! No matter what people say, I know inside their Cold hearts, they deeply hate him because of it!

what does non-black media have to do with anything here? please don't derail the thread...not that i expect a Kobe thread to last long on here anyways...

why do you think so many people hate him?, because hate him or love him, it doesn't matter, he's the best player in basketball today and chances are he's embarrassed your team...people will always hate the #1...not to mention a lot of people dislike his swagger...i for one dont like Kobe's aura or his swagger, but Kobe's game is air tight, so i dont hate him, i just dont love him...not that this hasnt been covered 10000000 times

I'm not talking about the article, I talking about the Media like TV, etc. They have put an image on Bryant that makes people wanna hate him. They've only changed this year.

can't believe it hasn't been touched on yet. It is because every single NBA fan, reporter, etc... ALL LOVE Shaq, and therefore since Kobe "forced" the Shaq trade (even though he didn't) everyone hates him.

Kobe is hated because he's good and he knows it. Other greats were hated during their primes for the same reason.

Fact is, Kobe has gone mainstream. If you look at the number of people that hate him, it will outweigh the number of people who even know the name of most players. But you could also say the same thing about the number of people that love Kobe. He's just so known that if you look at either side - haters or fans - it will seem like a lot. Both sides are passionate about their opinions, and each side tries to scream louder than the other.

No ones opinion will change, because the same reasons he's hated are the same reasons he's loved. Just respect his game. That's all that matters. There won't be many, if any, players like him once he's gone.

Just because you're the most disliked player in the NBA, it doesn't mean everybody hates you. In fact, outside of Yao, Kobe may even have the biggest fan following of all players currently in the NBA(playing for LA certainly helps). He's a polarizing figure. You either love him or hate him and this was TRUE WELL BEFORE THE RAPE fiasco in '03. Stop putting everything on what happened that summer. Kobe was EASILY the most hated player in the NBA(at least among NBA fans) from 99-03.

Agree 100%, when is the media ever going to stop reporting on the things that occur?

A lot of people do dislike Kobe. However winning cures all that; if he wins a title or two and he will be on some type of advertisement.

Barry Bonds never even tried to be personable to the media. Also Barry never won......

He is the most feared player in the NBA, voted by other players. With a guy like bryant, I think he would rather be feared and liked.

The other aspect of bryant that gets unnoticed is the amount of charity work he does without publicity. Guys like shaq, jordan and bron do charity work but they make sure the media is there to cover it, guys like that are kind of phony. Kobe, Robinson and Mutombo are players who do thing behind closed doors away from the public, they do things without thought of whats in it for them, you can respect that type of attitude.

Why people dislike bryant is his possible greatness triumphing jordan. I am starting to read and listen to alot of current and former players, coaches and GM's claiming kobe is better than mike. And the voices are getting louder and more numerous. A few years ago such thought was considered sacrireligious, but today it may be reality.

I hated MJ back in the day because everytime the Bulls play, you know MJ is gonna dominate. Now I know how everyone who's not a Laker fan feels..lol
