20 years in this league... only 1 losing season. that's pretty damn good and consistent. people question his ability after stockton and malone left... but guess what? he has new players now and the jazz is one of the top teams in the league right now. i understand that his chances of winning the COY award is slim this year. byron scott, stan van gundy, rick adelman are the front runners... every year... there are new coaches that get the award but never sloan... last year, he should have won but mitchell got it..

he deserves one before he retires.

He's so consistent in having winning seasons that it's hard to notice when he's having a COY type of year, if that makes any sense.

last year was one where he had a chance... he got no chance this year. Only if Utah will win next 15 games..

He should've won it the year hubie brown did when the Jazz were predicted by many to be the worst team in the history of the nba and they ended up almost made the playoffs.

although Phil Jackson has won one COY award, I think he is in the same boat as Sloan.

consider what the expectations for the Lakers were at the beginning of the season and not just where they are now, but also where the expectations for the Lakers are now as well.

I think this is the biggest factor. Even when the Jazz weren't very good on paper Sloan was able to keep their record respectable. COY awards usually go to coachs who have a massive turn around from the previous season, win 70 games, etc... Unfortunatly, consistency isn't really recognized when the award is handed out.

There are a lot of good canidates

Doc Rivers: He has produced the best team record so far even with KG being injured

Phil Jackson: Has gotten the Lakers to overachieve thru an emotional season

Rick Adelman: 19 wins....and counting

Byron Scott: Has done an outstanding job with a pretty weak bench

Flip Saunders: Kind of overlooked because of being in the weaker East. But he has coached them to the 2nd best record in the league.......

I wouldn't include Rick Adelman it's easy to say "19 wins and counting" but let's not forget about the rest of the season.

I mean if a player has one good month you don't just forget about the rest of the season and give him the MVP award. It's the same thing with COY...

Barring crazy Utah run to end the season and finish with the #1 seed, not this year. Honestly I can't see him winning it unless he announced he would be retiring at the end of a season, then they might give it to him like a career achievement award (kind of like the oscars). He's been looked over so much it's hard not to be pessimistic.

He will just have the COY award named after him after he retires....

The Sloan Coaching award...

He had his best chances IMO during the '03/'04 season when we were picked to be far and away the worst team in the league and ended up winning 42 games and last year he probably would've won it if we didn't stumble down the stretch. Like everyone has said it's much more noticeable to see a team make a huge turnaround than to be consistently good. A lot of the times that reflects the coach, but probably more often because of new players brought in or players finally stepping up. Pretty much his only chance of getting one now is if he can ever take this team to the #1 seed in the West in the coming years.

What does that have to do with winning COY? Take a look at who's won the award over the past 20 years or so and most of them never won a championship.

There have been a lot of coaches or players who had great careers without ever being recognized as the best in any particular year.

I think the argument that coaches or players accumulate credit over the years that ought to be rewarded at some time actually leads to greater 'injustice' than the original trend, if you think something as ultimately insignificant as a sports award should be considered within the realms of justice.

I actually think Sloan is having one of his better years as a coach.

He's changing his gameplan to allow more 3s than ever before now that he's got Memo and Korver.

He's found a way to bring AK back into the fold after a turbulent offseason.

He's doing a terrific job giving time to AK, Korver, Harpring, and Brewer all in different types of situations that they can do well in.

He made the correct decision in benching the veteran Hart for the better and younger Price.

I don't think there is much else I could ask of Sloan this year. He's giving us his 'A' game as far as I'm concerned.

He is never going to win that award just like Kobe and the MVP.
