I think he can be a solid backup PG or 3rd string PG, He would be the ideal glue guy who can also step up if someone gets injured.

i would like him as a 3rd stringer or IR guy..he was a great cheerleader for the Pistons but he was at his cheerleading peak with the Kings, never before seen since Mark Madsen.

I love Mateen but he sucks, he will never do anything in the NBA. Thats if he even makes it back.

its mateen btw.
that msu team rocked. gritty team.
izzo is the man!
i don't recall why he didn't last in the nba, but it had to do with his lack of a jumpshot no?
in any case, i still love his name.

He was one of my favorite college players, but he just couldn't cut it in the NBA which is a shame, damn I miss watching him in March.

Aww, another thread about a guy with loads of potential who hasn't delivered much of anything while playing with Sacramento, Cleveland, and the Sonics. Look at the competition. He is where he belongs.

I just went and looked up his college numbers and I was shocked by how ordinary a college player he was (by the numbers only, of course).
His senior year he averaged 12, 2 and 7... with 4 turnovers. For an under-athletic senior with a mediocre J, you wouldn't think that would be enough to go mid first round. Sure, 7 assists per game is nice in college, but turning the ball over so much should have been a warning sign.
His pro-career was basically what you would expect. Mediocre at everything, couldn't shoot, couldn't defend, and turnover pron.
I guess that "leadership" and those "intangibles" didn't translate to the NBA.
I'd rather have El-Amin.

I agree ... Mateen was helped out in college by Magic Johnson constantly being interviewed about the newest Michigan State PG.
Mateen also owes Dick Vitale a couple game checks for the hype machine .... bay - beeeeeeeeeeeeee
