But he should coach again.

This may seem like a nOOb post but i dont give a ****....i got two electrical engineering midterm exams tomorrow so I wanna make this quick and snappy....

How good of a coach was he in your eyes

Larry Bird is the worst GM in any sport in the past 20 years. No one has single-handedly destroyed a top 3 team in the league like he has. Not only that, but he has also managed to drop them to having some of the worst attendence percentages in any major sport.

Larry Bird should just go home, stare into the mirror, realize he was a great basketball player, but that he lacks the intelligence, business skill, or intelligence (repeated again because it is so obvious) to be a successful executive in any aspect of any industry.

i wouldnt mind him coming to the mavs especially if we're 1 and done. if he brings carlisle to be his asst. that'd be good, he'd have a real veteran team like he did w/the pacers. only thing that'd be annoying would be hearing every game (or national game) the bird/dirk comparison b/c they'd be coach/player

I hate tp have to defend Larry Bird here but I will:

Larry hasn't even been GM for a full year yet. Those of you not familiar with the Pacers situation might not have fully realized that Donnie Walsh was still essentially in control until the end of last season. So far Bird's moves consist of: signing Kareem Rush, Stephen Graham, Andre Owens, Flip Murray, Courtney Sims ( all under $1mil ) and signing Travis Diener ( 3 yrs $1.5mil per ). Given the financial handcuffs the team is in with Murphy, Dunleavy, O'Neal and Tinsley I think Diener and Rush were very solid signings for the small price.

Donnie takes credit for the Golden State trade. The only other move Bird is really credited with is the Sarunas Jasikevicius signing which was a bust. Bird hasn't had the same type of experience screwing things up that McHale or some other poor GMs have.


So to say "Larry Bird is the worst GM in any sport in the past 20 years" is pretty ridiculous even on the Bill Walton Hyperbole Index. Bird may prove to be terrible, I'm definitely not ruling that out. I tend to think you need someone more creative (like a Kevin Pritchard) and owners willing to shell out dough (like Paul Allen) to get a team out of a rut like the Pacers are currently in.


As far as a coach, secret of Larry Bird's coaching time with the Pacers: he was acting like a CEO and Player Personnel Manager. Rick Carlisle was doing the real coaching during those years (Bird has admitted as much). So now that Carlisle is out of the picture, who knows how good Bird would be.

You'd be WAY better off just getting Carlisle. Rick is a fantastic coach that got the post-brawl Pacers (starting guys like Fred Jones, Eddie Gill and James Jones) to the second round of the playoffs that year. The guy knows how to maximize talent.

Well he got his team to the finals as coach. He was doing something right even if it was someone else doing the "real work"

Ignoring for the moment that you don't know what you're talking about regarding his GM career, did you forget that Bird is a former COY?

He was a great coach, he just didn't like doing it, which is why he went up to the front office in the first place.

Bird didn't Coach for ****. First of all he already had a 50 win team, the year before he came they had alot of injuries. The two years before that they won 47 and 52 games. So he already had vets that had chemistry, then he had RC and Dick Harter to basically run the offence and defence. Any average Coach with a brain could have done a decent job with those things in place. Larry Bird is a idiot and I can't wait untill he's out of Naptown.
