NBA looking at expanding use in late-game situations

The NBA will consider an expansion of instant replay that could take effect as early as next season, SI.com has learned. The new application appears to have the blessing of coaches as well as the league office, which will present the concept to its competition committee in June.

Wary of creating regulations that could interrupt the flow of play, the league is examining a limited use of replay that would enable officials to instantly convert a three-point shot into a two-pointer, or vice versa.

"The one area that we're exploring is the three-vs.-two shot call near the end of a game,'' said Stu Jackson, the executive VP of basketball operations for the NBA.

They should keep in mind plays that were argued, then when a TV timeout or regular timeouts are called, the refs will review it, and the commentators could say "Upon review, the refs decided to take two points away in a previous play that was argued by head coach X, refs saw that he really did travel."

Or something like that.

And on this subject, it's about damn time they do something with the instant replay.

It would be worthwhile to give coaches 'a challenge' per game, so they can review a play (to their liking) with video evidence; a la the NFL....

I don't really see the point if its just for 3 point calls. It will disrupt the game for little benefit. Its not like blown 3 point calls is all that significant of a problem.

you'd think they could also use it on any play where the refs admit they don't know what happened, like they don't see who the ball went out on, and decided to instead have a jump ball. Usually while they are huddled up discussing plays like that, the replay is shown on the screen at the arena where all of the fans and all of the players can see what happened, but the refs can't.

Pretty much so they could dispute some foul calls and or out of bounds plays as i've seen a couple horrible calls in previous years playoffs that could have caused a series to go either way

Its a good idea, but not sure that instant replay can work in basketball the same way that it does in other sports.

In football, for instance, there is a pause between every play where a play can be challanged. Because of the fast pace of basketball, several possetions could go by before there is a dead ball. Its hard to retroactively change the score, because it could affect how a team approaches their posseSion (if there down by 4 instead of 3, they may choose to go for the best shoot rather than force a three). Likewise, you can't just pretend that 4 possessions never happened because of a missed call 1 minute prior.

Similary, there really aren't a ton of "reviewable plays" in basketball to begin with. You should never be able to review a foul call (just like you can't review a holding call in football) because this is entirely based on the officals judgement. Thus you are left with basically reviewing three plays. 1) who did the ball go out on 2) did a player step out of bounds 3) was a shoot two or three points. Myabe you could include goaltending in there as well, even though its a judgement call, its not as subjective as whether there was a reaching foul or not. Either the ball was on its way down or it wasn't. Granted in the last minute of a game, any one of those calls could potentially change the outcome but it certainly isn't a scenario that happens frequently. You would have to have a bad call in a close game, with less than two minutes.

I'd like to see a little more accruate officiting, but I don't know that its worth disrupting the pace of every game for the half dozen or so games a year that it COULd actually change the outcome.

its a good idea, i remember cuban protesting that pacers game earlier this year b/c they called a 2 pointer a 3 pointer.

i dont see why it should be just in the closing minutes b/c a 3 in the 2nd could be just as crucial

maybe no more air balling 3's into the hands of a player who then dunks the ball after the clock has expired...maybe...

prolly has something to do with refs refusing to call a shot clock violation on Lebron...pathetic.

i think it has more to do with the amount of complaints filed this year...

I hope they have replays for clean blocks that are whistled as a foul. Those drive me insane.
