Cant say i blame him, i woudnt want to watch that junior varsity team they call the Miami Heat either. Plus how do you look into Marions face and tell him your not playing him because u want more ping pong balls.

tanking is nothing new.. how u think cleveland got lebron? denver got melo? sh*t the knicks are even trying to tank but they prolly have a better chance winning by not playing their 15million dollar/season players.. remember the celtics last year? did the same thing miami is doing, yet it really has nothing to do with their success this year to be fair.. tanking is NOTHING new

Are we not remembering that:

a) Pat Riley is not just the coach but also the President of Basketball Operations (and thereby effectively the GM) for the Miami Heat

AND

b) Mickey Arizon (the owner) directed him to involve himself personally in the scouting effort?

C'mon man, read up before you spout off.

More importantly, what is there to be gained from Riley continuing to coach the team? His coaching magic is only so valuable if the team on the floor is insufficient to the task of playing against NBA caliber competition.

Their two All-Stars are out (Wade for the rest of the season because of his knee), Marion's had I think back problems, they've applied for roster exemptions and what-not...

I mean, they're going to be fielding Stephen Lasme so that they can ensure that they dress 8 players a night.

What value is there for the head coach/GM to stick around in that scenario when he could be gaining valuable personal evaluation time for the top college prospects?

A little foresight, please.

Man sucks to be a Heat season ticket holder. I wonder if any of them will renew next year. I'd be pissed if i wasted all that money on a team that disrespects it's fans like that.

tanking is nothing new, but Riley is publicly doing it. Saying the seasons over for them with 20 games left, leaving the team to scout and benching guys. Its nothing new but he's publicly anoncing everyone of his moves.

I can't even imagine what its like in that lockeroom...

Yes...and some of you hating hypocrites need to realize that he's also President of Basketball Operations. Since coaching is pointless this late in the season, he's gotta do the other side of his job so he can IMPROVE his team. It's not like he's going on vacation. The guy is on official team business. Plus, he's also going with the blessing of team owner Mickey Arison.

Therefore.....STFU all of you. :wavefinger:

First off if he wanted to tank more, he would most likely keep Jwill in the games because he's just awful. Right now, I'd probably want Quinn on my team anyway because he has to go out everyday and perform to show he belongs on the team. Jwill just sucks this year

Second, he wants to make sure that they land the guy they truely want. If they get the first pick, it will be Beasley. If it's the second, it will be Rose. After that, there really isn't a player that distinguishes himself from the rest of the pack. Right now, they are projected to be the 1st pick, but they want to make sure they are confident with there decision if they land outside of the top 2.

well the heat have been out of contention for a while, so im sure most of those guys are now ok w/the realization that the season is a waste... so theyre probly out on south beach every night gettin ****, and spending a lot of money and having a good time... theyre probly very loose in the locker room talking about what ******** they scooped up the night before

Can we please keep the discussion towards the subject, and not about what sort of nightlife the Miami Heat players enjoy, and especially in such a unneeded manner?

tsherkin's right about Riley.

The locker room's probably great. It's no doubt a bunch of young guys over-the-moon excited that they have an opportunity to play in the best league in the world. Besides, next season that team could be a contender with Wade, Marion, Haslem and a top-4 pick. The season ticket holders will no doubt renew for that.

With the 4th pick in the NBA draft, the Miami Heat select DeAndre Jordan, Texas A&M University.

Analysts everywhere fawn over what a great pick that was.

It doesn't have to be Beasley or Rose, and there's an argument that there are teams that are better fits for those players. If I'm Riley and I get the #1 overall pick, I might just trade down to the 3-5 range in order to get my athletic centre and either dump Blount or get other picks as sweetener, maybe both.

didn't jason williams win them a game a few days ago right before his "injury"?

The problem is that the Draft system encourages tanking. And it's almost necessary to tank to rebuild a team nowadays, especially now with the higher pay. It's hard to clear up enough room to build a championship just off getting free agents from bidding wars. To open a contending window, the easiest way is to tank a few years, get as many lotto picks as possible in a short period of time. That way you have a ton of cap space to sign free agents, meanwhile you have potential stars you can re-sign later on.
