Has an MVP ever not been an All-Star?

Post#1 » by DelaneyRudd » Sun Mar 30, 2008 3:52 am

I am just wondering, not because it will happen this year, but because I think Deron Williams should be at least on the top-10 lists. I am wondering if he might be the closest to that thing ever happening. (It will be Kobe running away and deservedly)

I believe Dave Cowens wasn't even all nba 1st teamer when he won the MVP... I am pretty sure that has never happened.

Well, I am talking in the same season. An MVP will obviously be 1st team in the same year.

Yeah in the same season Cowens won the MVP, he was an all-NBA second teamer.

Maybe someone has missed the all-star game because of injury and won MVP.

hmmm.... I hope Deron Williams makes the All-nba second team, but looking at the guards around the NBA he might struggle to even make the all nba third team

Yet still be in the top 10, that's my point. West guard is so freaking stacked.

There have been several years where the MVP wasn't on the NBA 1st team. Look up Bill Russell.

To the question: The answer is yes, and his name is Karl Malone.

1999.

There was no All-Star game, and Karl Malone was MVP.

Missing do to injury is not not being an all-star. Has someone who the fans and coaches snubbed ever been the MVP. Thats the query.

Yes, the players and coaches in the Union snubbed the entire All-Star game in 1999.

Yes yes. We all can laugh at me for being a tit bit slow. LOCK OUTS EXCLUDED! Karl would have been a shoe in.

What about Bill Walton winning it from the bench?

No

About the closest situation I know of was Russell's rookie year.

He led the league in RPG, the Celtics won their first title, and he did not make the All Star game. Nor was he rookie of the year. In retrospect he was always the Celtic MVP. Russell finished 4th in total rebounds despite playing just 48 games

But he missed the the first 2 months of the season because he was on the Olympic team, there were 3 Celtics already on that All Star team (Cousy, Heinsohn, and Sharman).

Heinsohn was Rookie of the Year and Cousy was the MVP.

But no one has been slighted in the way that you asked.

IF McGrady leads the Rockets to the #1 seed in the West, and didn't have a lot of injuries during the 1st half of the season, and the West wasn't so stacked, he would easily be the MVP.

so yeah it's possible
