Gilbert Arenas has told the media that he is willing to sign for less with the Wizards in order to keep Antawn Jamison as his teammate, the Washington Post is reporting.

"I want to see Antawn taken care of first and then I'll take the pay cut to keep the team intact," said Arenas, who plans to opt out of the final season of his contract.

He obviously won't be taking a pay cut, but he is open to signing for less than the "max" in order to keep the team together.

What is your take on this? I know there are many who just hate Gil and will bash him for anything he says....but lets see some opinions.

I think it would be awesome if we could keep both, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Since I'm not a relative of Abe Polin's and not in line to inherit any of his wealth, I think it's silly. Besides, Polin is a cheap, two-faced bastard. Look what he did to Jordan. Used him to sell seats for 2 years, then wouldn't even let him reacquire his share in the team. Obviously Jordan's a failure as a business man to do something stupid like that in the first place, but still...

i don't think he would've got the max anyway

I think Areneas honestly believes this right now, and could of honestly changed his mind on this matter by next week.

Abe is the lowest of the low. And I read in the Washington Post that Abe didn't tell the other board members that he was going to fire Jordan and they all came to the board meeting and out of nowhere Abe fires MJ

I don't think he'll get the max either, but I also don't think he'll take anything less than the max he can get

I'm actually glad to see the possibility that some players out there still care about winning as much as their wallets. That is the difference from seasons past where your franchise player will make room to keep an existing member because they knew they were a big piece of the team.

Now really I dont know if I believe him but notice that I wrote "the possibility"

It's not really a matter of believing him or not. It's a matter of understanding that Gilbert says whatever is on his mind at the moment he's being interviewed (or writing a blog, etc). He can say one thing, then do the exact opposite. He can write that, if he isn't cleared to play, he's going to crash his car into a wall.

He says these things because, whether he's joking or not, that's what he's thinking at the time. It doesn't make him any less sincere or a good/bad person. But people need to realize that everything Gilbert says, fun/insulting/good/bad/whatever, needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

This is no different. He may think that it's a great idea to take a paycut and give the remnants to Jamison NOW, but he may have something else on his mind when he's ready to start negotiating with Wiz management.

This thread isnt really about Abe or MJ, but I will say this.

What Abe does for the community and such is incredible.

he's indirectly calling out antawn and his possible salary demands.

I hope the Wizards don't sign Jamison to a big long term deal. That would cripple the franchise.

I love Jamison, but the dude doesn't play defense. He should definitely take a pay-cut to what his salary is right now.

I think Arenas wants to win and make a statement in the playoffs. He also likes the chemistry between the big three of the Wizards.

I wonder what his agent is thinking when he reads that.....

Agent zero is his own agent

If he doesn't opt out, he's going to make $12.8 million next season and then be a free agent. I don't believe for a second he's opting out to sign for less than $12.8 million (i.e. a pay cut). It looks like he's doing two things

1 - putting pressure on everyone for Jamison to stay in DC
2 - giving himself an out to leave DC if they don't
