2008 Defensive Player of the Year?

Post#1 » by Harry10 » Wed Apr 2, 2008 8:42 pm

Marcus Camby: has the best numbers, but it is hard to give DPOY to a guy who is on one of the worst defensive teams in the league

Josh Smith: big play, and defensive game changer, but has consistency problems

Dwight Howard: 7 foot Ben Wallace, no real criticisms i can think of

Chris Paul: steals leader

Baron Davis: has a better steals/TO ratio than Paul

Ron Artest: he can still bother any super star in the NBA

Bruce Bowen: does have stats, but you can't argue with results

Caron Butler: man to man defense is actually quite excellent, and has really stepped up since Arenas left.

Tim Duncan: stats are not amazing, but no one really challenges TD anymore.

Players that KG is guarding are shooting 13.1% below the league average at their position. So he's guarding power forwards, and they're shooting 52% league-wide, or whatever it is. Guys that he's guarding are shooting 39% all year. That's just KG, one on one, against his man, when he's on the court.

LeBron's guys are shooting 2% below the league average for their position. Kobe's are 3% below. Chris Paul's are 4% below. And KG is keeping people 13% below. In other words, he's snuffing them out.

why laugh at bruce bowen?

we should be laughing about baron davis for defensive player of the year.

if somehow that award goes to any warrior, which it shouldn't, it would be steph jackson, who holds his own on the defensive end better than anyone on that team.

as for kobe bryant. he is deserving of the mvp.

not the DPOY award. his team is slipping on perimeter defense a lot recently.

the fact that Garnett isn't on that poll is a huge oversight.

Garnett should win DPOY as he has been the best defensive player in basketball, but he probably won't because he doesn't have sexy defensive stats like a Camby or many others.

LMAO Baron Davis in poll and no KG and KB ? Even if KB isn't DPOY he deserves to be in discussion.

It's KG and it's really not close.

And Dwight Howard is a 7 foot ben Wallace? He's not even 7-foot, though he is a better man defender.

Honestly, KG's opponents PP48 and EFG% is wayyyyyyyyyy lower than any of these guys, and he's the only one anchoring the best defense in the league.

It's really not close, unless you think steals/blocks should be the complete measure of good D.

Just for comparison, here are KG Vs. Duncan

Duncan has played almost all his minutes at the 5 this year, so we'll use those stats first, the numbers behind the / will be his minimal time at the 4.

Duncan at the: 5/4
Defensive rating: 89.4/90.4
Opponents PER: 16.8/22.7
Opponents Points per 48 minutes: 17.1/25.7
Opponents EFG%: 47.9%/48.5%

The Spurs are .9 points better when Duncan is on the floor.

Garnett played most of his minutes at the 4, and some 5, so we'll list the 4 minutes first

Garnett: 4/5
Defensive Rating:86.4/93.1
Opponents PER: 13.1/16.8
Opponents Points per 48 minutes: 16.5/15.6
Opponents EFG%: 40.9%/48%
The Celtics are 4.3 points better defensively with Garnett on the floor.

I don't think the Celtics have better defensive personnel than the Spurs to be honest, but KG is flat out locking down the PF spot, playing man D better than Duncan and Howard at the C spot, and anchoring the top D, with a pretty good, but no outstanding defensive supporting cast. Camby and Smith aren't really that close

I don't think a point or wingman can affect the game anywhere near a big on defense, and Garnett is far outplaying the other big men defensively.

and NO-KG-AI is a hornet fan.

he knows. kg shut down david west in boston a few days ago.
apparently the abuse kg had for leon powe in practice, helped them get hyped up to shut down the hornets.

absolute domination in the third quarter by the c's. it was sad to see for me really.

is it possible for camby to get it, and then the nuggets somehow don't get into the playoffs? is that possible? lol. when do the voters vote?

It's a shame that the same argument people are using for KG getting DPOY, us Spurs fans have been using for the past 10 years for Duncan to get one. Sure he doesn't have the stats but the Spurs were the most dominant defensive team in the league over the past 10 years. Yet not one Spur has won a DPOY. The award is a joke and only goes to players with sexy stats like Camby, Wallace etc.

It's almost definitively KG. He changed the whole defensive culture of the Celtics with his psychopathic intensity.
