Distance Covered

I was watching the UEFA Champions League quarter Finals (soccer), and there's an interesting stat called distance covered. At the end of a game, it gives you the names of the players who covers the most distance. I think top players cover 12-13 kilometers (about 8 miles) in a game.

It's calculated by using advanced sony cameras and some sophisticated video processing software.

I've done some research and according to these statistics, on average, 1/10th of the distance covered by a player is sprint. So, a top soccer player covers 1.2 to 1.3 kilometers while sprinting. A sprint is classed as a run made at quicker than seven meters per second, equivalent to running 100m in a sharp 14 seconds.

I haven't come across to a similar stat for NBA but I was having a discussion with some friends. Some argued that an NBA player who averages, say 38mpg, would cover more distance in a game than a soccer player. Some argued the opposite way.

What do you think about this? How much distance do you think would be covered by an NBA player who plays 38-40mpg. How much of it would be sprint?

No way a soccer player definitely covers more ground in a game than a basketball player. Forget about the fact that a soccer game is nearly twice as long as a basketball game, a soccer field is much larger than a basketball court. I'd look up the dimensions to prove my point if I wasn't so lazy...

John Havlicek put I think 5 miles on a pedometer one game.

Definitely more than the average basketball player.

I'd be curious to see how much distance a guy like Rip Hamilton travels in a game though.

Soccer players don't go end to end, which makes the exact dimensions of a soccer field moot. But yeah, soccer players probably run more.

It's fun how soccer has such a dearth of stats that they have to come up with that though.

Chuck Norris put that same pedometer on. After the game was done, the display read "Still counting, give me a few more years."

Length of a soccer field is about 100-120 meters and width is 80-90 meters. 1 meter is like 3.2 feet so figure it out.

It'll be interesting to use the same system on basketball players. Sure they don't cover as much as soccer players but still it would be an interesting stat.

Kobe Bryant can cover a lot of ground because he's really fast.

Michael Jackson used the same pedometer and it could not compute due to a sensor overload.

ZING!

How are the Warriors a bunch of thugs? Your attempt at a joke has absolutely no wit to it.

Monte Ellis or Lebron probably cover the most ground. Rip Hamilton and Arenas also cover a lot of ground.

I reemember a special on rip hamilton and how he just keeps going, saying he runs an average of like 3-4 miles a game, which is nothing compared to a soccer player
