NBA commissioner David Stern and NCAA president Myles Brand are in agreement that both sides would benefit from a rule that would require players to stay in college for at least two years before leaving early for the NBA.

Now they just have to convince everybody else.

According to sources, the proposal would still need to be passed through the NBA Players Association.

"It's a big step for the owners and the commissioner to say they're ready to bargain in good faith to get the rule passed," said one college coach who wished to remain anonymous. "The NBA is willing to give up something to get this rule passed; we just don't know what it is yet."

The NBA adopted a 19-year-old age limit through the collective bargaining agreement which expires in 2010-11.

If the new rule goes into effect, it would eliminate the one-and-done players such as Greg Oden and Kevin Durant and force them to spend at least two years in college.

Hell Greg Oden couldve had career ending knee injury if he was being forced to stay at Ohio State for 2 years

Also i feel bad for the losing teams the year that they do it...Talk about the worst draft class in history

I for one am glad, I think 20 is the right age...It will be better for College clubs, they dont get these in and out kids which hurt their draft class and make it hard for teams to build in many cases and it helps keep some of the stupid kids out...they get a little more experience in the game and in life before they jump in to making millions dog!

ad if they suffer career ending injuries in College, oh well...part of the game son...we're making it too easy for these kids as it is...being a million dollar face of a franchise and role model should not be as easy as simply lacing up your sneakers, it's ok to work for it you know...there will always be great young talent waiting to enter the NBA...

I don't like that we deny the right for players to play in the NBA due to their age.

I would be happy with such a decision.
2 years in college is really good, you have a better formation, both for basketball and life in general.

Toronto wouldn't have taken Oden anyway, he doesn't shoot threes.

Stupid rule IMO, but i guess this is another case of one hand washes the other in regards to the NBA and their farm system er counterpart the NCAA.

The age limit disaster continues. If they are going to make this a rule, we need to revisit the issue of going pro out of high school. If players had the right to turn pro after high school OR go to college where they MUST stay at least two years it would make more sense.

It is unfair to force an O.J. Mayo, Derrick Rose, or Michael Beasley to attend college for two years and risk injury when they could be playing in the NBA. I don't understand why the NBA gets to determine what is best for young kids.

Agreed, and I hope (and think) high school players will begin to go to Europe rather than play for free in college.

theres no reason to make a kid like oden beasley or durant stay more then 1 year

Why would we want people to attend college if they have no interest in getting a degree? Universities should spend their money on "real students" not guys waiting to join the NBA.

^The NBA gets to determine what is best for itself as an association, each of the ballclubs, and individual players.

I think the NBA should transition into this rule, if it is implemented, and allow NBA teams to select freshmen for ONE draft but not allow them to enter the NBA until the next year. If this were the year, for example, Miami/Minnesota/Seattle/Memphis/New York would be able to select Beasley, Rose, or anybody they wanted to, but it would be a calculated selection. Rather than screw over an entire lottery class, teams would face the compromise of drafting for now or next year, which is better than drafting with an incredibly weak selection.
