Why the need for divisions?

This really pisses me off. Forget putting the top 16 teams in the playoffs, that's just not feasible, but there's no reason to seed teams based on division standings. They changed it to the +1 system, which seemed alright at the time, but now it looks like Phoenix could potentially get screwed by having to play the Spurs or Lakers instead of the Rockets.
Think about it, it's as if they had 5 wild card teams in MLB as opposed to 1. There is absolutely no need for divisions in the NBA, where you have 16 teams making the playoffs. If they want to simply give a playoff spot to each division winner thats fine, but don't mess with the seedings, you're potentially putting teams at advantages or disadvantages for no damn reason at all.
