My theory on the Pau Gasol trade...

First of all, i just want to say that this is not meant to be an attack on the Lakers or the fans but here goes: How were the Lakers able to acquire Pau for next to nothing? I mean...I read on some internet article that the GM of the Grizzlies did not mention he was going to trade Pau. It came out of the blue. Surprise, surprise...the Lakers got him. The Celtics acquired two players over the summer that instantly made them contenders. All of a sudden...the Lakers get Gasol and they are the clear favorites to come out of the west. The Celtics are favored to come out of the east. This would be perfect for the NBA. Bringing back the old Boston/LA rivalry. The ratings woul be through the roof. In other words...I think David Stern stepped in and somehow had hand in the Pau trade hoping it would make the Lakers contenders which could be the perfect setup for an old rivalry that brought the ratings. Im not saying im 100 % sure, but itis a theory. Your thoughts?

In other news, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have announced that they will run for President of the United States!

Highly doubt it. Stern doesn't have the power to force trades between franchises and I'm sure management and the shareholders would have said something by now if that was what happened

i'm sure mark cuban and other owners would gladly stand back and watch that happen.

Boston is not the popularity juggernut they were in the 60's and 80's, if it wasn't for ESPN forcing all things Boston down our throat no matter what I doubt people would care

I honestly wouldn't doubt it.
What did the Grizz out of that trade for their Star center?.....Nothing.
It works perfectly in terms of storyline/ratings.

The NBA doesn't have the same pure image it used to, a lot of things seem fishy now and you can't help but think about it like this.

Owner looking to shed as much payroll as quickly as possible, and no alternative = Gasol deal

So the other lop-sided trades in NBA history are just forgotten because it wasnt the Lakers?

I think Heisley said that he spoke with a few teams and they were not offering the players he wanted back. In light of that he went for the finacial flexibilty and is building a new young team from the ground up.... OR selling the team.

He is not going to pay a guy 14 million a year to suck moving forward.

I dont think its any secret that Gasol was available - he said he wanted out last year. Mitch said they have talked a few times over the course of a year and when they touched base this year the possibilty was there for a trade. Kwame the basektball player was not traded- his contract was.

The Lakers got a steal of a deal, no doubt. But its possible that they were at the right place at the right time and had the pieces the grizz wanted.

Or it was some super top secret conspiracy. :dontknow:

If Stern is into fixing things, I really hope that the Bulls either get a top 2 pick or trade for a superstar using only spare roster parts.

I heard the Grizzlies wanted to trade Gasol for Nocioni, Noah and Joe Smith but the Bulls didnt want to go into the luxury tax..

I think the Bulls made an offer like that, but since it didn't include any immediate expirings the Grizz took LA's offer.

There is of course the story that the Bulls could have S&T PJ Brown, but that would have put them in the tax and wouldn't be an option.

Ugh. Seriously, this? Again? If I had a dime for every time this conspiracy theory was mentioned, I wouldn't be a rich man, but I'd definitely be able to bury the theorists under a crap load of dimes.

in regards to the celtics, thats flat out collusion. ainge and the anal one in minnesota passing along the goods to boston. perfect set up and assist from mchale to ainge for the score.

in regards to memphis, the latest thing in NBA economics are final ending contracts. and the biggest final year contract in the nba belonged to kwame brown. take him on for one year, and then tons of capspace the following year. memphis will draft high. they have some good talent. and they are setting themselves with big time capspace. so its all set up for them. celtics? best record in the nba. LAKERS? fightin for the top spot out west.

minnesota? they are getting taken to the woodshed.

the OP's theory is (Please Use More Appropriate Word) for no other reason than look at the knicks... if stern had a hand in things the knicks wouldnt be so terrible for so long... new york has consistently been one of the biggest markets in basketball... if stern could orchestrate gasol to LA and KG to boston then surely he could make the knicks a 45+ win team.

How? Minny got a stud young big man in Al Jefferson. They got a great role playing guy in Ryan Gomes(who boston would still love to have). They got two more guys full of potential(that unfortunately never/hasn't panned out) in Telfair and Gerald Green. That is much better than what the Grizzlies got which was nothing.
