Pursuant to NBA procedures with regard to career-ending injuries, the Portland Trail Blazers have requested waivers on forward Darius Miles, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today.
An independent medical examiner jointly appointed by the NBA and the NBA Players Association examined Miles and determined that the damage to Miles

It's sad to see such a talented player never reach his potential due to a lack of desire.

wow, I remember him dropping 47 on the nuggets a few years ago, what a waste of talent

That acting job doesn't hold a candle to the performance he pulled off convincing the old Blazer management to sign him to that ridiculous contract. He should have gotten an Academy Award for that one.

How much cap space would the Blazers have next season after this?

Interesting, because I don't look at it that way. To me it's a valuable life lesson--you don't take care of your business, you fail. Even if you CAN dunk a basketball.

The Blazers wont have cap space this offseason, but in 2009 when Steve Failure, Raef LeFrail and Darius Milesintheskysodamhigh all come off the books the Blazers will have enough cap to, potentially(If they let most players outside of the big 3 and Rudy walk), sign 2 MAX Free Agents. Of course, they wont sign 2, but they are definatley going to try and get 1.

It's tough to say, but they should have a considerable amount of FA cash in the summer of 09 with Miles gone. They'll have 6 Team Options in that summer, Oden, Aldridge and Roy will obviously have their options picked up. Then there is Outlaw, Blake and Rodriguez are somewhat up in the air for that summer (they'll probably only decline those options if they need a little extra space).
Then they will have 3 players who'll be RFA's and the Blazers will need to decide upon (let walk, resign, or sign to the QO). Those 3 are Webster, Frye and Jack. I think most Blazer fans would be surprised to see Jack on the roster by the summer of 09. Frye and Webster have a bit better chance.
Regardless of how they handle their own players, they should have enough to sign at least 1 max FA.

Not bad, considering where they would've been had Miles still been a member of the team.

If they let go of only 2 or 3 of Blake,Outlaw,Webster,Jack,Frye, Sergio, they will have around 20 Million in cap space

Kevin Pritchard was just on the radio here in Portland talking about the big news. When asked about the cap space, he said that they are expecting to have somewhere around mid-20 to low 30 million in cap space. He admitted that's a "fluid number" as things can change a bit, but they definitely want to have enough to bring in a big-time FA in 09.
Pritchard has done a masterful job reshaping this team. Not only will they have a ton of cap space in 09 now, but they also won't be paying the luxury tax either. He said that's why they made this move at the time they did. That way they'll be "tax collectors instead of tax payers."
