David Blatt to the NBA - why not?

Post#1 » by bender235 » Wed Apr 16, 2008 3:04 pm

He recently split up with Efes Pilsen Istanbul.

Couldn't he be a candidat for the Bulls, Knicks, Warriors (if Nellie retires), too?

He's a good coach, a main reason Russia won the Europe.
I can see him in Toronto.

David Blatt is way good. He would make the Knicks a championship team. Very humble, but very smart coach that knows to assemble roles and define no star players.

As mentioned before, he is the reason Russia raped the rest of the European superpowers in Eurobasket.

Let's not go that far. They would probably fight for a playoffs spot though.

Probably because he will needt o be an assistant coach for a year or 2 first.
And he will kake less money in the NBA that way.

Replacing Isiah: Options abound in Knicks coach search
ESPN.com wrote:David Blatt: The longest of long shots, Blatt nonetheless is considered the best American coach overseas. The Russian national team coach was fired recently by Efes Pilsen in Turkey. Euroleague conspiracy theorists believe he'll soon replace Ettore Messina for CSKA Moscow, but it also should be noted that he was a college teammate of Madison Square Garden president Steve Mills'. Blatt told ESPN.com last summer that he was at a point in his career when he would want to come to the NBA only as a head coach, not as an assistant.

The Knicks should definitely give it a try.

I think Blatt belongs in the NBA. I think Utah would be a great situation for him. He can come in and assist under Sloan for a year and then take over the job.

Efes Pilsen made a really dumb move by firing him.

The real reason for the failure of Blatt: American players!

This episode, I believe, has split the team.

Honestly, I can't really blame the American players for not wanting to go.

Having seen some of the anti-Kosovar independence rallies, I wouldn't want to be an American in a basketball environment around that time.

Especially in Belgrade, where the basketball games are crazy enough without all the nationalist sentiment involved.

Knicks have a lot of talent, but their posessions are showmanship galore. Under Blatt system, there is no such thing like that. They don't need go to guys to win championships. Type of Sloan, or more like Detroit Pistons like system. Players have very set roles, and from defense to offense it is a beautifully oiled machine, everyone get involved into it.

The one thing that might be a drawback about Blatt is that he's not the confrontational type of guy, which defines many of the current good coaches (even Phil Jackson know when and how to take jabs), and is usually needed to control star driven NBA.
He's a brilliant basketball mind, and has a great eye for talent (not very relevant to the NBA, but still), I think he's more suitable to be senior assistant than a head coach.

Come on, Duiz. I agree with you that Blatt is a great coach. Maybe the best basketball coach not in the NBA, but you can only be joking if you think a team can go from 23 wins to being a contender by simply changing a coach.

Obviously I am kidding.. but teams like Raptors, Nuggets, and teams like that in which their coaching ideology is what is killing them can be greatly affected.

I think his Eurobasket championship with a no star team (Only Kirilenko, who is known for his D) beats Lithuania, France, Spain, Greece.

I think that the Knicks would have realistically a 20+ win improvement. The knicks are better than they show. If the GM is in the same page as Blatt, Knicks can revive.
