Should the playoffs re-seed after each round?

If anyone is familiar with the NHL they know the playoffs get re-seeded after each round. That is, the team with the most points from the regular season in the playoff round will play the team with the least amount of points in that round. This is NHL's way to avoid the top 2 teams playing each other after round 1 since the division leaders get the top3 seeds like it was with the NBA a couple years back. Then NBA changed it so that division leaders are gauranteed a top4 seed, not top 3. Of course the NBA doesn't use points like the NHL, so it would just be win/loss record rather than points.

The one drawback (or perhaps the way it should be) is that a lower seed will have to continually play the top teams. If you are the 8th seed for example and you beat the 1 seed in round 1, your reward would be you get to play the 2nd seed in round 2 (assuming 2 beats 7) instead of playing the winner of the 4/5 matchup as it is now.

Some of you are probably thinking, "what happens if the 1,2,3, and 4 teams all win"? Well if that happens 1 will play 4 and 2 plays 3 in the 2nd round anyways regardless of which system we use.

No, it's fine the way it is.

Its fine the way it is...the top teams usually advance to the later rounds anyway

Nah. Basketball upsets are comparatively rare. If you got extremely lucky/played awesome/ enough to upset a much higher seeded team, you deserve a break.

Nope, big upsets should be rewarded.

It's more exciting the way it is now.

Exactly, if you reseed after every round you penalize teams for having the big upset. That's just ridiculus.

We would be penalizing the team for having a bad regular season record.

Also works in reverse. With the upset, you are just giving the higher seed an easier path to through the playoffs, which except for maybe this year out west, usually isnt necessary. I mean if say philly upsets detroit, do we really need to let the Cs avoid Lebron in round two?

NFL does that too, I believe.

But it is fine the way it is.

The NFL is different in that the 2 best teams in each conference get a bye week. They reseed to reward the 1 seed over the 2 seed.

i swear the only reason reseeding came up is because of Dal/GS. if Dallas had won nobody would have been whining about SA/Phoenix being in the semis because the best (regular season) team would still be in it and probably in the Conf Finals.

Don't mess with the NBA Playoffs.

Re-seeding, best sixteen records, mixing conferences... it's all baloney, pushed by a self-concerned media.

I have to agree with you... leave it as it is...

I in fact liked it when it was 4 divisions...

Pacific
Midwest
Central
Atlantic.
