I will go with the Spurs. Playoff team since '88. Contender year after year.. other candidates... lakers, bulls, and maybe the rockets.

portland was pretty damn good for the first 15 years or so but the wheels came off after those 2000 WCF.

Lakers, Bulls, Spurs not necessarily in that order. With the Pistons just on the fringe of that group (need another title to get in.)

Bulls, Spurs, Lakers seem like a consensus. So start ranking them... Top 5????

Title wise I guess the Rockets, though you could probably make a case for the Jazz or Blazers despite lack of titles.

Yeah, no titles, but damn consistent, and a high level of play for a majority of it.

I don't think Bulls should count, it was MJ and MJ alone that put the Bulls on the map, without him they don't have much playoff success.

Why arbitrarily choose 1985 as a cut-off date? Why not 1980 or 1988?

LA is the easy choice for me. 6 titles, 3 other finals appearances, and only missed the playoffs twice.

The Bulls are really an interesting case. A few mediocre years, then a few good years, then 6 titles in 8 years, then 6 years of nothing. Then the hard-to-interpret recent period. If you value consistency a little more, you could drop them below the Spurs and Pistons.

The Spurs have 3 titles and have consistently made the playoffs and advanced at least past the first round. The Pistons also have 3 titles, and have lots of conference finals appearances. But they also missed the playoffs 5 times, and some of those teams were really bad.

The only thing that sets the rockets apart from the Blazers and Jazz is that they won two out of the three times they made the finals . Portland mad the playoffs for the first 19 years after 85, but they only advanced past the first round 5 times. Add their so-so last five years, and I don't think they're in the top 5. Utah had a record similar to Portland for most of the period. I think the last two years help to put them over the edge.

Boston might get a little overlooked here. They made the finals 3 times in the late 80s and won a title. They haven't been spectacular since then, but they have made the playoffs more often than not.

The heat weren't around for the whole period, but they have tended to make the playoffs and they won that one finals. Phoenix only made it to the finals once, but they made the playoffs all but five years.

A few years don't make much difference. A more recent start date hurts the Lakers and Celtics a little, but helps the Pacers and Bulls. Starting farther back helps the Boston but hurts Chicago. Other than that, it doesn't affect the top teams much.
