And...Boston learns that Doc Rivers comes back to bite them

A year ago (and even longer back), lots of Celtics fans, including Bill Simmons, the Sports Guy, were calling for Rivers' head. He is mediocre coach without the proper x's and o's to run a team without assistance.

But all of a sudden, Boston acquires KG and Ray, and Doc Rivers becomes "one of the best coaches in the NBA". No mention of the previous year of Rivers' coaching by Simmons or on the general board by realgm fans.

So, what gives? I would venture to guess that there are lots of coaches not coaching right now who would have already won this series against Atlanta. Tonight was the first playoff game I watched, because I generally don't care about any other team except the Bobcats, but that was some pretty pitiful coaching by Rivers.

I'll give him credit, he is a decent motivator. But thats about it.

Yes, its Doc Rivers fault that kg, ray allen and paul pierce didnt play hard enough. KG isnt on the block pounding the ball and scoring...he isnt carrying his load...he should be scoring 20 ppg.

Edit: I think anyone who has followed the team, and the NBA, knew that Doc would ultimately be the weak link on this team........

Doc Rivers is the same guy who continued to give playing time to guys like Raef LaFrentz and Mark Blount over Al Jefferson, because Blount and LaFrentz had "earned it." It's hard to **** up the current roster too bad (though he still found a way to put Scalabrine on the court at times), and he's actually done a pretty good job dividing up the playing time...that said, he's done an absolutely terrible job of actually coaching the team that's on the court.

Doubt Boston ends up losing the series, but...BUT...Doc did lose a 3-1 series lead with the Magic.

(Though the Magic weren't a 66-win team going up against a 37-win team)

Please, I love KG as much as the next guy, but getting manhandled by Josh freakin' Smith? KG needs to dominate pure and simple. That's his legacy on the line.

^^^Don't take anything away from Smith. He was fantastic. And the way he played tonight with the determination he had he would have looked great against anyone in the league. Smith was out to prove something tonight.

Smith is a face up 4, more of a SF on offense.

KG is a 4/5, after added weight and knee injuries, it's hard for him to guard that type of player now.

He does need to start being KG on the boards though, he should be getting 14-15 rebounds per like he usually does in the post season.

Against a defensive team of Boston's caliber you play as good as they let you play, most of the time at least. And not to take anything away from Smith, he's a great young player, but the way current DPOY let him attack the rim time and time again, while settling for jumpshots on the other end? Pathetic.

I remember Rivers coaching Magic to the loss against Pistons in the infamous TMac "I'm glad to make it to the 2nd round" series. They had Doc mic'd when the Pistons went on a critical run, and all he was broadcast saying was "Play HARDER, We've got to play HARDER!!!" Over and over.

Doc has his problems, but tonight, Boston's big three looked to have 0 chemistry going between them. Like they had been thrown together for the first time.

It should be remembered that these guys have never played a pressure packed playoff series together yet.

If they can get things turned around back home, and they should, this series might even end up helping them in the long run.

Back on topic: yeah, bad coaches get exposed in the play-off.
Just like Doc did.
His guard rotations are horrible, having both Ray and Sam outthere in the same time, it's a defensive suicide. Play Rondo with Ray and Tony Allen with Sam, it's not a rocket science.

I think KG is too into the "team concept" right now, all 3 of the big guns on Boston seem to be letting things come to them, and don't look to have the urgency yet.

In fairness to KG, I don't think you can expect the regular 14-15 rpg anymore. As you stated he is a bit heavier and has had knee injuries. It sort of went unnoticed with his overall excellent season, but he suffered a big drop in his rebound rate this year.

With all that said, I would be surprised if he didn't pull down 14-15 boards tomorrow I just don't think he's capable of doing that every game throughout the post season.
