Media Double Standard: Dirk and KG

Post#1 » by sp6r=underrated » Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:12 pm

Dirk Nowitzki was severely criticized in the basketball press and by fans for the David West incident. He was labeled as soft for not retaliating against West after the slap in the face. KG has not gotten any criticism for not going back at Zaza. Some even praised him for showing restraint. He got no really attacks for the Peeler incident

The only possible explanation I can find is that people think Dirk is a choke artist and that KG is clutch. There playoff statistics do not bear that out, though. As Dirk has not suffered any greater drop in his post-season performance than KG has.

Dirk Per 40 Minutes,

Code: Select all

PPG,  RPG,   APG,   BPG, SPG,  TS
Regular Season: 24.55, 9.44,  3.00, 1.11, 1.00, 0.583
Post Season:    24.13, 10.55, 2.38, 1.01, 1.22, 0.570

KG Per 40 Minutes,

Code: Select all

PPG,  RPG,   APG,   BPG,  SPG, TS
Regular season: 21.56, 11.77, 4.67, 1.78, 1.44, 0.546
Post Season:    21.09, 12.39, 4.54, 1.69, 1.35, 0.510

I agree with you and I'll just say part of the reason some people will not dare label him soft is b/c of the "tough guy" perception he puts out. But there is indeed a double standard.
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

I agree too! The more I watch Dirk, the more respect from me to him. He is the only one who show up in his team in this year's playoff. He hasn't give up yet. Moreover, he is clutch; he is not the choker that the media makes him to be.

Because KG is not Euro, and plays defense. But neither of them are real vocal leaders, all KG does is pump his chest and scream like a lunatic, Dirk wags his tounge around, tugs on his jersey and throws up various hand signals. They are both great players, Dirk just happens to be better.

KG didn't let a guy out his hands in his face. KG stood his ground. I don't see how you can compare the 2.
I am far from a KG fan, but KG didn't get punked.

All dirk has to do is yell

"B*tch A** Ni**a" 100 times a game at the crowd an opposing players for no apparent reason.

Throw in a few random "M*tha Effers" in there too.

I have never seen a player get away with abusing other players and the crowd every game of the season like KG does and yet the media chooses to call this : passion and intensity.

He just looks beligerent to me.

I just think Dirk should have knocked his hand away. Not push him or anything, no fight, but just knock his hand away.

I think its a bunch of BS...

KG is supposed to be one of the so-called 'tough guys' of this league and he was PWNED by a "soft euro" in Pachulia...

so does Pachulia's exchange with KG disprove the 'soft euro' theory??

GO HAWKS.

KG's a poser and a primadonna. He acts tough, but he wouldn't want to run into Zaza in a dark alley.

I don't think so....but that is another topic for another day.

Anyways... Dirk has the soft label ingrained into his career due to last years playoffs. Let's call it what is was... an all time disgraceful performance from the MVP.

KG has the legit excuse that he has always been on bad teams but right now has to step up his play in order to not share Dirk's exact same criticisms or even worse.

Actually I think Dirk reacted just right. And the non-reaction at West was IMO a way better answer than shoving his hand away or sth like that.
This not caring about what West did has a "David, you're making a fool of yourself. You trying to provoke me? I don't even care at all about you."-impression on me. Kinda act how you wanna act, I don't care about you.

Really? That's the only reason? The thought that KG was the instigator/agressor whereas Dirk was the "victim" never crossed your mind?

Peeler instigated with KG a few years ago and no one called him soft for that. So the victim/aggressor thing doesn't hold.

I agree with everyone else. There is a double standard here based on KG pretending to be a tough guy.

PS: Dirk is more clutch than KG.

K.G is looking to pull a Dirk this year. He might win the MVP and manage to get bounced in the first round.

Are you suggesting that KG should have thrown a punch at Zaza?
At least KG confronted Zaza, unlike Dirk who simply walked away like a roll of charmin asswipe.

Not being able to post up a smaller opponent is soft.
Moreover, losing to an 8th seed is soft.

LOL, I'm stating we shouldn't call Dirk soft not that KG should have thrown a punch. KG walked right away from Peeler he never got called soft. bull, pure double standard. He did basically the exact same thing KG does, and yet everyone calls him a pussy. Finally if your gonna kill Dirk for not going in the post, you should kill KG to, he doesn't nearly use his post game enough.
