After both teams were among the West top teams for the past 4 seasons, neither have accomplished anything despite being powerhouses. The firings of Avery Johnson and Mike D'Antoni may very well be on the verge. So have we seen it come to an end?

For the Suns, I really don't know what they could do. They have no trade assets besides Barbosa and the Hawks pick their owner is cheap and their GM is a self proclaimed "idiot".

The Mavs on the other hand, do have assets, but they gave up their biggest one for an aging player (like the Suns did). It's possible the Howard and Terry might both be move to help restructure the roster.

Also...we might see the end of the Pistons if they fail to reach the finals. But that's for another discussion.

Gone are the days of The Mavs-Suns reign in the west and now are the times for Lakers, Hornets and Jazz.

It's just amazing that the two teams that made the big deals after the Gasol trade are now out.

The Mavs are definitely done. They overachieved in the last couple of years. Losing Devin Harris will come back to haunt them in time.

The Suns still have a shot at something, but their title hopes are pretty much. They can't beat the Spurs, but I also have my doubts that they can beat the Jazz or the Lakers or the Hornets next season. The West is just too good for a team to have as many flaws as they do.

So yeah, this is the end of the Nash-Nowitzki era in terms of those guys dominating the league. The Suns may make an appearance in the second round or the conference finals if they matchups work out for them, but they're not making the finals and Nash likely only has a season or two left.

Both teams might end up doubly screwed by those trades as well because of the sentiment that the trades were made so late that neither team was able to mesh. I wouldn't be surprised to see both teams just try and make a coaching change, and perhaps not even that.

Mavs are out, Suns are out, Toronto is out.

They all lost to teams with traditional bigs who rebound and defend.

When did Nash and Nowitzski ever dominate the league? They were media darlings and won 3 MVPs but nothing else. I wouldn't call that domination, I'd call it being overrated and the media guys not knowing crap about what an MVP is

I think the Suns aren't done. They have one more year left. Shaq looked ten times healthier with the Suns and he has a year left of being a 10-10 guy. Amare will explode for an entire season and will be an mvp candidate. Nash has about a year left before his decline really begins. They have the heart and desire to win, they just need another backup front court player, they really shouldn't have gotten rid of Kurt Thomas and a true backup point guard. Too bad their ownership is among the worst in the league.

The Mavs are definitely done. they have no fortitude and the players that do are not really THAT significant (stack and george just role players). The Mavericks problem in my eyes is that they have very little identifiable problems but they keep on losing.

the Suns however are not out. they have had the omen of integrating the most unique player to ever suit up for an NBA team and they only had half a year to do it. The problem i see with the Suns is fixable with the addition of one single player, Corey Maggette. the Suns are easier to guard right now because they have one dimensional offensive wing players (bell is a spot up shooter and Hill doesn't get to the basket like he used to). with the addition of Maggette i think it will keep the opposing teams big men honest and in foul trouble because he will either draw fouls or double teams on the drive and hes become a willing distributor.

No, I think Mavericks will completely have a overhaul on that roster along witht he coach and be better next season. The Suns just need a new coach.

Yes and no, in different senses.

Its definatly the end in terms of them being considered contenders. Both now have made moves that have aged them, in return for attempts at win it now or go bust. Both teams have been considered potential candidates to dethron the Spurs the past 3 or 4 years; and in terms of that era; they are no longer a part of the "west tri-fector" that we would arguably all have agreed on the past few years.

However, I think both are in positions where they will find it hard to shift players. I dont think we'll see major player changes; so in that sense it will still be roughly the same team. The players the teams can shift are probably the ones they want to keep [Mavs: Howard/Dirk, Suns: Amare/Diaw/Barbossa] though then again, they might want to take a different direction; but they'll be stuck with the golden oldies.

One problem is, they dont have really all that much scope for trades - though without looking at contract lengths I am sure mid season at some stage they'll be able to make some good expiring deals and get something in return.
