Sad state of the NBA IMO (and other sports where coaches get the quick axe).

I guess this means a major make up change for the Mavs? Johnson did pretty good while he was here, but since Wade made them choke, its all been down hill since then. With Baron killing them in the first round, and now CP3 finishing it off. I'm also thinking Josh Howard is being traded this off season.

back to back first round exists including the embarrassment of last season's loss to the 8th seed, yeah he deserves it. Regular season means nothing.

I personally think Avery is overrated. He inherited Don Nelson's team, did a very good job with them, but ultimately he's not anything special as a coach. I don't like the way he continually compromises his team's identity by altering the starting lineups in an attempt to copy what Popovich does (you can try it, but when it doesn't work...get a clue). He gives off a very strong image, but you have to wonder if the Mavs recent choking tendencies are all on Dirk, or if it starts with Avery.

I think the Mavs have a great deal of talent, and the right coach will make them dangerous. I didn't understand the move for Kidd because Dallas's offense was tailored around isolation...meaning Devin Harris was a more appropriate fit than Kidd. But maybe with a different coach and a different offensive scheme they can retool things to work.

too much of a control freak like skiles.. coaches like this have an expiration date when they get tuned out.. they can't last more than 2-3 years with the same team before the players turn on them..

who else thinks cuban did this to distract everyone from the train wreck that is the mavs?

now, everyone's talking about the new coach rather than what a mess this is.

cuban sucks.

Kidd, Cuban = Failure.

Avery's inability to adapt to other teams game plans = Fail.

It's everyones fault really.

I hate Cuban, he has got to be the worse owner. Even though of course no one will say it publicly. He's basically a fan that got rich and could buy a team. The sad part is he doesn't know enough to surround himself with knowledgeable people.

I agree. He's just a rich fan who goes after big names, and apparently doesn't know much about basketball. With all that money, he should hire someone qualified to make the right decisions for Dallas. Although if he continues his ways then I won't complain. I don't mean to insult anybody, but I enjoy watching the Mavericks fail :)

Many of you can be against the firing all you want. The fact is Avery didn't coach this team well throughout the players and he was handed a playoff contenders from the get go.

To his defense, I will say I love his passion, heart and fire on the sidelines. I just feel it's his time to go. When I watch NBA games, I focus on the Coaching side of things, and it was clear Avery was out coached throughout the season.

The Dallas bench also needs to be rebuilt, because Avery didn't have much to lean on, and Josh Howard didn't help his cause.

Now I need a new sig and avy.

But this was expected, maybe not this quick though.

Avery is one of those coaches that starts off great but then the players stop listening and he just has to part ways with the organization.

Credit to Avery though, he got the Mavs where no one has ever gotten them, top 3 coach in Mavs history, maybe even all-time for now, but it's in the best interest of both parties.

there are a few elite coaches in this league. the rest or beginners or in the process of learning to get better. and even then, the experience of playoffs is a whole nother beast to get a handle on.
