Who is good/bad about autographs?

Post#1 » by dream34 » Thu May 1, 2008 11:13 pm

I just read an article about the Jazz players habits of signing autographs..

"Deron never signs when they lose," explains Romney, who claims to have been at this spot all 43 Jazz home games this season.
"They are our fans, so I try to [stop and sign] as much as possible," Millsap said earlier in the day. "I am amazed at what some of them will go through to get an autograph. Sometimes there are a lot of people out there and you have to pass them by. But we do what we can."
Too bad not all the players share the attitude of Korver, Millsap, Brewer, Miles and Kirilenko, Romney says.
The autograph seekers pretty much agree that those five are the best.
And the worst?
"Carlos Boozer and Matt Harpring," says Toomey, "are almost impossible to get. They never stop."

And it got me curious about other teams. Who always seems to sign autographs and who always seems to avoid it? This is mostly for people who try to get autographs before and after a game.

I hate when players refuse to sign autographs. It makes them think they are better than everyone.

At a Rockets game Shane Battier signed a book for me, and Luther Head avioded my friend.

Compared to getting them at the hotels or the arena can be very different.

The Good:

Grant Hill is by far the best at signing. Unless it was raining I don't believe I have ever seen him pass anyone up at the hotel.

Tracy McGrady signs but emphasizes only one.

Dirk can't pass a good fan that has pant on his or her body.

Jermaine O'Neal is good at signing.

Bad:

I've never seen Kevin Garnett sign. He normally avoids everyone and the same goes for Ray Allen. With my experience Ray will take a taxi to the arena and not wait for the buses.

Steve Nash has started shying away. I have many autographs from his from his early years, but he started to not sign as much, so having a post game pass helped me get him this year even though he didn't seem thrilled about it.

Phil Jackson won't sign and normally just says mail him whatever you want him to sign.

Good luck getting Lebron James.

I've only seen Iverson sign at the arena.

Well, I'm going to stop there for the time being.

Every Rockets game I've been too has been either at Detroit, Indiana, or Cleveland and Luther and Shane seemed to be the best at signing autographs.

Tayshaun was an ass about signing autographs.

I'd assume the more popular players are more reluctant to sign since you sign one, then you kinda have to sign a hundred kind of thing, and the people who you end up don't signing for thing you're a "jerk". You don't win.

Athletes can be total jerks but so can "fans" who keep wanting more and bother players in more private / personal settings or players might just find fans in general fickle and get an attitude about it.

Some players are also wary of the professional autograph seekers (resell at their stores, auctions, conventions, ebay).

Then there are some players who may have a financial interest not to sign (might have a contract with a shoe/card company advising/pushing them not to sign too many items to reduce the "value" of their signature).

Frankly I'm perplexed at people wanting sports people/musicians photographs or hanging out after games/shows trying to hang on to the players/group, and I don't buy into the mentality that their millionaires and I pay their salaries so they have to sign , blah , blah , blah. Their commitment is between the lines and to stay professional outside of it. Outside of that they don't owe fans jack imo.

Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."
