Are Dwight Howards Rebounding Numbers A Little Skewed?

Post#1 » by Scalabrine » Thu May 8, 2008 11:33 pm

Dwight Howard is a monster dont get me wrong, he averaged 14 rebounders per game which is pretty tough to do in the NBA during one game much less an entire season. But I have seen people saying that hes on of the best rebounders of all time and clammering up Dwight Howard, is that all that fair? I mean look at the offense hes in, its pretty much get the ball to Howard within 8 feet and if he can get close he scores or he passes it out to three point shooters, he is the only post player on that team that gets real substantial minutes and the next best rebounder is averaging 5.7 rebounders per game. Has there ever been that wide a margin between rebounds on the same team EVER?

What makes him a better rebounder than Patrick Ewing or Charles Barkley who averaged 12 plus rebounders with other players also averagin double figure rebounds?

The fact that he averaged a double double out of high school, and that he averaged 12.5 rpg on a top rebounding team in the league last season.

Hell, just watching him, you can see him get rebounds that no one else gets.

Oh yea, three 20/20 games in 5 games of a series in the playoffs.

I've never heard anyone call him the best, but he is easily the best in the NBA right now.

It isn't just the numbers, but the actual rebounds he gets are insane. It isn't uncommon to see Howard in the middle of four defenders and come out with the rebound, he's just huge.

KG in 03-04 had 13.9 rebounds a game ,2nd on the team was 5.7,3rd was 3.8 which is pretty comparable to Orlando with Dwight at 14.2,with 2nd and 3rd at 5.7 and 5.4 a game.

He averaged 12.3 last year on one of the slowest teams in the league. A faster pace is obviously going to help him get rebounds, but he is definitely the best rebounder in the league. Especially when he WANTS to rebound. When he goes into the game with the intention of rebounding his ass off, he gets rebounds that are ridiculous. He'll tap them to himself, tap them off the backboard to himself when defenders are nearby. He just crashes the glass so hard.

And what's disgusting is that he doesn't box out! Howard uses pure athleticism and his size to get the rebounds. He rarely blocks out. If he learned proper box out techniques he'd probably average 16-17 rpg. But there's really no reason for him to box out in his mind so he doesn't.

Now whether he's one of the best rebounders of all-time is hard to say. We'll see how he does over his career. It's hard to compare rebounding numbers to players like Wilt since they put up astronomical numbers in an age when the play was so fast and there were so many shots taken in a game.

Uh he pretty much has to dominate the glass for his team to have any shot at winning. If rebounding is so easy how come Amare doesn't average 12 a game, after all the suns play at a much faster tempo.

Dwight will learn to box out as he gets older.

Bottom line is he has to grab 15 rebounds a game, all while being his teams primary option on offense. Personally I'd like to see us just penetrate most of the time and allow Dwight to be in position to dominate the offensive glass. He's the best rebounder in the league, I doubt it'd make much difference if Ben Wallace or whomever was on his team.

I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

I think to an extent, the factor of lacking at least one decent minute playing big man that can rebound, has played a part this season

Yeah hes a great rebounder, but put him next to another big man, and he gets a couple less a game. Theres not one else on that team who rebounds the ball really.

Kidd went to a good rebounding team in Dallas..and he went from 9 a game..to 7 rebounds a game.

This works with everything though..Same thing with guys that have no other good playmakers will have slightly inflated assists. ..and guys that have no other good scorers will have inflated points a game.

I don't think Dwight will ever be one boxing out. Tom Izzo said he stop teaching boxing out because players that box out don't grab rebounds.

I never heard anyone say Dwight is the best rebounder ever. Really per minute there are about 6 or 7 guys that are very close to Dwight rebounding output.

Matt Goukas says he's one of the best rebounder he's ever seen and constantly puts him up there with Russell in terms of rebounding the ball? Homer talk, perhaps, but Goukas played in the era of Wilt and Russell so he has an idea of what he's talking about.

Maybe a bit skewed, he's pretty clearly the top rebounder in the league right now though.

yea I think Goukas played on one of Wilt's teams and played against Russell, so if anyone knows what they're talking about it's him. Then again he could be a homer. :P

Wilts rebounding numbers aren't even relevent anymore. The game was nothing like it is today.

I'm sure if Dwight played in a era of 150 available rebounds per game he would put up some Russell and Wilt like rebounding numbers. IMO Dennis Rodman will probably be the greatest rebounder that I have ever seen. To me he dominated games with his rebounding. I remember the Bulls taking shots and Rodman grab the offensive glass. Then someone else would take a shot and Rodman do it again. Literally he would do it over and over and over again. Rodman might have been the MVP of the Bulls 4th title he was so dominate on the glass.

I am not going to talk about guys who i've never seen play. I'm too young. I just know the game was completely different when Wilt played. I can talk about the two best rebounders i've seen in my life.

This is on ability alone but it's Dennis Rodman and Charles Barkley. One isn't any better then the other. Rodman got more rebounds then Barkley because thats all he did on offense and on defense it was his main job. They were both unreal. They both had amazing instincts and they both boxed out.

Actually a lot of times theres a bunch of people around him (our team and theres).. a lot of times he fights off his own players for a rebound because he wants it so bad. So its not like hes the only one under the hoop, and he had crazy rebound games last year WITH Darko and Battie
