This week, Marc Gasol, who beated the Historic Arvidas Sabonis record in the ACB (spanish league) consisting in numbers of MVP, Sabonis had 11 MVPs of the week, now Marc, who finished the season as the better rebounder of the league (8.4 RPG) and 16.5 PPG (#4 in the league) with an impressive 67,5 %FG, had 18 MVPs this regular season.

Marc Gasol, who was selected in the second round in the past draft by LAL, and traded rights to MEM, ends his contract in his spanish club in the next month, so he would be free to go to the NBA, but some importants clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid are offering him some nice deals. Real Madrid is actually offering 3 years deal for 2.5 million

Scenary will turn around. Eventually dollar will appreciate and things will tend to equalize.

Nevertheless, playing in the NBA is not "so" profitable anymore. Of course, superstars will be payed infinite more than in the rest of world, but some other marginal or bench players who could be kind of stars in Europe, could see how european teams pay them like $3-4M to play overseas.

Europe is going to get more talent over the next couple of years, IMO. American players no longer view Europe as a 'bad' or 'necessary' place for careers anymore. In the mid 90's, there was really not many players who wanted to go there. These days you could make an argument about MLE players actually might end up going there, due to them becoming instant starters and stars over there.

I saw a report a year or two back which compared earnings between average NBA talent and Euroleage stars. In Spain, a MLE player would roughly get 10% more through TV spots, merchandise and royalties for the use of his name in products. It basically proved that NBA talent could at some point make their way to europe instead of returning to the NBA. I haven't seen all that much about it so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if Euroleague teams started to sign names we all know.

I believe Memphis intends to use Gasol's rights as a trade chip this summer, so doesn't really affect their situation too much, but I can see this as a problem.

Marc is only just a fourth of Pau's talent imho so meh

The Cdn Dollar was worth only about 65-70 cents for much of the last decade, but now it is even with the US dollar.

I think there still to few teams able to pay that kind of money.
If they can manage to get to 10-12 teams able to afford> 15Meuros of payroll it could be very interesting as leagues could start competing for some players.

The only problem is that you need to be really proven to get millions in europe, something NBA journeymen or rookies aren't yet.
It could be different for european players, though.

It will only affect them and purchasing power when going back to europe and any good players still playing in euro earning euros, but there purchasing power will not be any different in the usa as compared to europe.

Then again you are talking about playing at the highest stage of competition in the nba, some ppl play for money or play for greatness, passion of the sport where you will be remembered.

Then again if you look at how many games is played in the nba compared to euro leagues/tourneys, the earnings per game is totally different with the advantage to europe playing lesser games.....

Probably he earns around 3 or 4 millions dollars per season + some gifts

For example Holden, his teammate, has got a little "palace" for him. He is the first American to be Russian citizen. He probably has some Estate gifts.

Not really a big problem because there are no great Euro players right now.

Marc Gasol wouldn't be much of a NBA player anyway so it probably makes more sense for him to stay in Europe where he can be the man and make more money.

Unless he's about playing against better competition there really is no reason for him to come to the NBA where he's not going to have a larger impact than say a Ronny Turiaf.

Well, I encourage everybody to watch the Olympics this summer. Marc Gasol will play a big role, and most people will be able to watch his improvements.

There is no better C in this year's draft than Marc.

As long as the prestige of Europe is what it is, I don't think too many players will jump ship. Maybe some Euros will stick around because they are already home. However, there is much more prestige of winning an NBA championship than winning any other title in basketball.

Excellent thread. I was thinking about this the other day and you are spot on. You are going to start to see alot of Euro players stay in Europe rather than leave for the NBA because they are getting more money there.

These guys who play in Europe get paid in Euro's and pay no taxes. I wonder if one day you'll see a decent NBA draft pick go to Europe and play because he can get alot more money there.

Marc Gasol would be easily a Top 20 pick in this year's draft and is already a much more valuable player than Ronny Turiaf. He improved tremendously this season.

I don't know the answer exactly since the salaries are not clear in Europe(especially in Russia) as in Nba, but I know that CSKA Moscow's whole budget is more than 50 million dollars so as someone mentioned before it must be around 3-4 million.

Maybe that day would be very soon, Kosta Koufos is his name. We will see how ends this thingy.

Nba needs to fix this thingy, of course NBA > Europe but the dollar is starting to suck too much.

The NBA is a different game, it's played at a much greater speed, and that is what concerns me about Marc Gasol.

Marc clearly isn't as athletic as Pau and doesn't look nearly as fluid when running the floor. He's more mechanical, and correct me if I'm wrong, but he's not as good a passer either.

In the US and Canada the NBA championships is #1 but in EVERY OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH the World Championship and ESPECIALLY the Olympics is bigger.

Dude stop the xenophobic nonsense please. Just because the US wants to be different than the whole rest of the world does not mean that people have to delude themselves that the rest of the world considers World Championships like FIBA world cup and the Olympics, more important than domestic national titles like NBA championship.

Not to mention that the Olympic basketball tournament is BY FAR AND AWAY the biggest basketball tournament in the world. The NBA finals are a minor blimp internationally compared to the Olympic basketball tournament.
