Every true fan's perspective is usually biased on calls. For years this myth has been the #1 excuse that every losing team provides. I dont know about you guys, but i'm tired of it.

The facts are,

1. Maybe the other team took the ball to the basket, pounded the paint, more than your team.

2. Maybe the opposing team played with just slightly more intensity at home rather than an away game.

3. If the refs make a bad call on one end, eventually they will make a bad call on the other end. Things usually even out. But fans only notice bad calls against them, not ones they commit.

4. Star treatment exists to a certain extent, but without stars you have no business being in finals. They are faster, more athletic, and some develop the skill of getting a call.

5. Getting a call is a skill, from the pump fake, to driving the lane and flailing your arms.

6. Close games are not decided by 1 bad call, every play in 4th quarter does.

7. The better team wins 99% of the time, with few exceptions.



I hate this "Refs cost us the game" excuse. I would love for at least the RealGM posters, who are very inteligent people, to erradicate it. Instead try to find the true reason your team lost and ways to correct/improve your team.

I should sticky this, and make it an announcement.

It's difficult for a lot of fans to come to grips with the fact that the team that they follow isn't as good or as talented as they think they are. Hence they play the "Blame the ref" card.

I agree, it gets very tiresome.

I can see all the Mavericks' fans come here with their rant.

well if you are tired of it now, chances are you will be jumping off a building sometime in the future...it's been around before you, it will be here after you...welcome to sports 101...

I don't think any team ever loses because of the refs. But that doesn't mean that bad calls don't make it tougher for teams. Fact is, the teams play for 48 minutes, that is what determines who wins the games.

In all fairness, They were screwed by the refs in the 4th quarter, but then again all referees make mistakes, it is part of the game.

I think some fans complain and blame the refs too much and some people like you, are still living in the past and don't want to believe that the refs are a problem now more than ever OR could be a BIG problem and affecting games. Like Roscoe said...it's all rigged. BELIEVE IT.

Also, the league could easily change some of these stupid rules that allow the tim donaghy's to exist and go undetected.

So no, I don't think it's as simple as you say, Mr. Stern.

The nba has changed to a more ref oriented game to prevent injuries. However, most of the time the calls even out to the extent that the better team wins.

I see no problem in trying to make the game safer.

That's silly.

I've complained about refs before, but I always look back at the game and say

'Well if we had better shot selection'
'Didn't have 15 turnovers'
'Did do that stupid play'

Sorry, but those 2 points are not true...

You're right - most of the time. There are some occasions here and there where the reffing is just outright bad, and one call can cost a team the game if the game is close.

There was this one ECF Finals game 1987 where Robert Parish just DECKED Bill Laimbeer. He hit him square in the chin, not the slightest doubt that that punch was intentional. Result: NOTHING. As a Celtics fan, I did not mind at all!

Ranting about the refs is just a way of dealing with a loss. Although they did **** us up big time.

I'll add two more:

1. You don't get the same calls on the road that you do at home, certainly not in the playoffs.

2. It's a hell of a lot harder to see things at floor level with everyone moving and heading in/out of your line of vision than it is to see them from above, where you are focusing on the ball and/or one player and can see everything clearly.

That's the truth. But then don't the referees have some responsibility on the outcome of the game? If a call at home isn't the same call on the road, then there is inconsistency in the officiating.

I can see why the Jazz have the best home record, even though they're not viewed as a championship contender. Their crowds can be vulgar and abusive. And the architecture of the building is arranged so that the crowd is over the court and sound can't escape. I think officials get intimidated by the crowd in that building. So that definitely favors the home team.

Same thing can be applied to other teams as well, regarding the home crowd swaying the officiating. Although I haven't heard of any crowds being openly racist (GS series) or making fun of a child with cancer (LA series).

Yeah, it's wonderful when people actually believe accusations without any proof.
