Slightly OT--Did anyone watch Candace Parker's debut?

Post#1 » by NUNBETTA » Sat May 17, 2008 10:24 pm

Did anyone see Candace Parker dominate her first game in the WNBA today on ABC? I know, obviously this thread is a little off-topic, and certain people won't be interested in any of Parker's exploits, but she thoroughly dominated the game today, and against the reigning WNBA champs. This isn't the first time I've seen Parker play, but this is the first time I've seen her dominate the game in all facets. I don't care whether you believe WNBA is a legit league or not, you couldn't help but be impressed by what Parker did today, if you watched her intently.

She was the best passer on the floor today, certainly. She was the best rebounder on the floor. She was the primary ball-handler in the fourth quarter (up until PHX started playing a zone). She took people off the dribble, she scored out of the post, she blocked a shot, she had at least one steal---and most importantly-- her team won the game.

I believe she finished with

34/11/8 on better than 50% from the field. The only knock on her today was the fact that she shot below 50% from the line, but she got there more than 12 times, so that's a good sign for the future.

Simply put, she looks like the future of women's basketball. She can literally play all 5 positions at different times in the game, and there is no aspect of the game that she can't dominate in some fashion. She was most valuable today when she was leading the fast break; she really did it all. Add all of those natural basketball abilities to the fact that she is 6'4 and can finish with either hand and she is an absolute match-up nightmare. Forgive me for being so gushing about her potential, but she impressed me immensely today, and if she gets any better than she is now, she could put up legendary numbers. When her jumpshot is falling, she is literally unstoppable, and we're talking about the highest level of women's basketball. It's scary.

NBA related: she's engaged to Sheldon Williams ( which everyone knew already, and probably cringed at) and her brother Anthony plays for the Toronto Raptors

Sorry for the rant.

She's better than Dwyane Wade.

She is

it's likes he didn't belong in the WNBA though she was so dominate.

I saw it, and it didn't look like she belonged in the WNBA.

Maybe in the NBA.

She is that good.

A little OT?

First of all, women shouldn't be out the kitchen or allowed to vote, so the fact that she is playing ball is outrageous.

I don't think she could play in the NBA, I think that's a bit unfair. Part of the reason she's dominated at every level of women's basketball (or will) is her physicality. She is tall and very, very multi-dimensional. Candace's size makes her impossible for most women to guard, she has too much ball handling ability to compliment her size and finishing ability. In the NBA, she'd be anything but versatile, and she couldn't be a match up nightmare. Think about it, in the NBA, she'd be a slow-footed shooting guard with only average range on her jumpshot, and a COMPLETE defensive liability. By contrast, in the WNBA, her size means that she can play all the positions on the floor depending on what her team needs. I think it's dumb to talk about her being an NBA player, but she does look like she might become unfathomably good in the WNBA, because of what she can do at her size. There is no player comparable to her in the history of the WNBA, and I suppose in that way you could compare her to Lebron James.

Candace is going to become the face of the WNBA. She did an amazing during her debut and LA will have a very good season as long as they stay healthy.

Unless you got recruited by D1A schools and are still at that level, I doubt you could beat her 1 on 1. She's 6'4, not the normal 5'7 WNBA player.

I think she could probably beat the two walkons we have here at Ohio State, Mark Titus and Danny Peters.

she's only a few inches taller than me, but she's listed at 170, and I weigh 210..that's a 40 pound advantage I have over her, and I definitely have much more muscle than her..I also have skills, I'm not some average player..so if I just played physical, I'd easily have the bump post-up to get a close-range jumper every time..I wouldn't worry defensively..

I'm not NBA level or anything, but you guys are REALLY overrating a women's league..

How is saying that you couldn't necessarily beat Candace Parker 1-1 an indication that we are REALLY over-rating the WNBA? You think the WNBA is a terrible league, that much is clear, but that indictment has very little to do with the talent that Candace Parker has, which is pretty evident. In any case, even if you could beat her 1-1, that doesn't mean you'd be a more effective player than she is, even in the WNBA. I think you're discrediting Candace's talent for no reason at all (other than the fact that she is a woman, I guess).

You're overrating yourself.

have you guys actually watched a WNBA game? I've tried, and it isn't pretty..I've never looked at any of them and said "damn, that girl is good"..more like "what the **** is this? change the **** channel"..

a WNBA phenom might be as good as the best male player at most high schools..

it's actually funny..how do you think they would deal with the physicality of an NBA game? there are NBA players like everybody on the Phoenix Suns that can't even deal with physicality without making excuses, but you guys think A WOMAN would be able to?..come on..

no balls, no game..
