Why America Hates the Spurs

Post#1 » by Basketball Fan » Wed May 21, 2008 7:45 pm

There's a lot of truth to it but honestly I find their fans annoying above all else and frankly the lack of ratings for the Spurs just proves how hypocritical American sports fans truly are. They talk about wanting humble and decent players but they don't go in droves for a team like the Spurs.

At least I can admit to wanting entertainment above all else.

Why America Hates the Spurs

Because you and the mean ol' San Antonio Spurs ruin happy endings for players and teams whom fans want to see keep playing. Oh, and also because you're too reliable and humble, in a league where mouthy and enigmatic happens.

"Is that it?" the Spurs' veteran forward said. "We're not who people want to see? That's funny, because when Ron Artest was having issues and the league was having image problems, all you heard was, 'Why can't teams be more like the Spurs?'

"The public thinks they want other things -- all the chest-pounding and screaming. But at the end of the day, quietly, parents want their kids to grow up in a way that they work hard, keep their mouth shut and act like you've been there before."

Bowen spoke from his cellphone in New Orleans on Monday night, three hours before his team methodically knocked out the Hornets in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals -- three hours before a player less than a month away from 37 years old, maybe the premier perimeter defender in NBA history, frustrated Chris Paul and some bold kid named Jannero Pargo, who thought he was going to save the day for New Orleans before Bowen got in his grille late and the rickety Spurs sent a bunch of postseason adolescents home for the season.

I do dislike them, but I also respect the hell out of them. I dislike them because I really find them boring to watch.

well since you post this thread, i will give my answer,

I hate spurs, because:

1. David robinson retired
2. duncan is overrated, malone is better than duncan, he had better playoff and season performance than duncan, but people said that duncan is the BEST PF of all time!!!
3. bowen is dirty, he shoulde be banned in NBA, it's a shame for a great sport like NBA to have a player like him
4. i used to hate manu, cause manu's flopper, but since i realize his greatness, i became his huge fan, that's i got my nick name GOAT:MANU. now, manu is my bball GOD.
5. TP is overrated, he's good, but some people put him ahead of MANU, it makes me hate spurs
6. except MANU, spurs game is ugly, it's not excited at all.
7. POP is the greatest coach of the last decade (at least), but DUNCAN received all the credits when spurs won, duncan the best PF of all time!!!! dirk's number is better than duncan, dirk beated spurs and duncan in 2006, but dirk received no respects, people forget that before Gasol arrived in LAKERS, kobe couldn't pass the 1st round, but still kobe is the best player for everybody :wavefinger:

The Spurs to me are like reading the same book over and over again.
The book is pretty good albeit a bit bland, but reading it once is enough.

I'm not sure that team has one personality combined between the group of them. I recall reading a comment from Tony Parker in which he stated that he didn't think Tim Duncan said one word to him during his rookie season. How do you spend that much time with someone and not say anything to them?

there's gonna be someone to say how real basketball fans enjoy the Spurs and that the rest of us just like dunking and that the Spurs are old school and the way basketball is meant to be played, etc.

For me, basketball is entertainment and frankly the Spurs don't entertain me. They run a rather rigid offensive system, have a few players that constantly flop on defense, outside of the Pistons complain to the Ref's more than any other team. They also lack personality. Bird / Magic / MJ, heck even Shaq were winning titles but they were guys or had teammates who were entertaining on the court with their basketball skills but also because of their personalities.

The Spurs are the Pete Sampras of the NBA. Just win baby, and that's great for fans whose main reason for watching is to cheer for the winner but I like the personality & even the underdorg moreso. I'll watch the Michael Chang's (underdog) of the worlds or the McEnroe's (talent & personality) over the Sampras.

Actual basketball is a different story. I want to win and have no problem doing the old man YMCA back to the basket post up game to get a point or two.

first off I love the spurs...im a warriors fan, but I do root for the spurs in the playoffs and I don't find them boring because they execute their plays and defense is amazing. It's fun to watch a team win on basics and discipline.

2. Tim Duncan 4 rings > Karl Malone 0. I know Malone had to go through Jordan Twice, but Tim Duncan had to go through the Lakers several times and the Pistons.

5. You hate the spurs because OTHER people rate tony parker over manu? Shouldnt that make you hate OTHER people instead of the surs?!

It seems to me you hate the spurs because the MEDIA says tim duncan is the best pf of all time or that pop doesnt get any credit when duncan and everyone on the team gives pop lots of credit after their wins. I say quit being a little girl and stop caring what everyone else thinks.

The Spurs hate is so last year.

Come up with something new, its clearly jealousy.

Ps Duncan is better than Malone.

I don't see how anyone who appreciates good basketball could hate the Spurs.

I'm jealous of their fans though.

Do we really have to have this thread again. Let me just summarize

Spurs fans: We are a great team, we won 4 titles in 9 years. We might be a dynasty. Duncan is the greatest PF of all time, Parker and Ginobli are no doubt all stars. Pop is the best coach in the NBA

Haters: Spurs are dirty, everyone is overrated. Malone is better than Duncan, a dynasty isn't a dynasty until you win back to back. Ginobli is a flopper, Parker is lucky...Both Duncan and Pop are overrated.

/thread.

BruceBowen wrote:Part of it is the selling of the sensational," Bowen said. "Like: 'Oh my gosh! Look at that guy pound his chest after he made that basket.' We're not Vegas. We don't have this me-against-the-world attitude. But that's what sells now. So they need to come up with labels for us.

I guess Bruce isn't a KG fan. :D

But I think the whole premise is wrong anyway, the casual fan doesn't hate the Spurs, they just aren't interested in them. America doesn't hate the Spurs, America hates the Patriots. The Spurs just don't draw that level of emotion out of people.

I don't get it, I actually find the Spurs to be a pretty exciting team, but its all about perception. Its easy to find a team boring when you want to.

If this team played in a major market like New York or Chicago or Boston, they'd be the second-coming of Russell's Celtics.
