Should There Be a Fair Trade Rule?

I know the obvious question is what is a fair trade?
Well to be more specific, should there be a way to prevent blatantly one-sided trades?
A trade like the Kwame/Gasol trade affects more than the two teams involved. It affects the ENTIRE LEAGUE.
Teams spend years putting together teams, scouting players etc. Players spend all this time in the film room, weight room, etc.
And it could all be for not if one jackass owner makes a trade of an all-star/superstar to a contending team for nothing in return.
Imagine if Lebron was traded to the Heat for Udonis Haslem.
That would not only screw the Cavs, it would screw the rest of the Eastern Conference. No other team would have a prayer of beating them if they stayed healthy.
Or how about more of a contending team. What if Lebron was traded to the Jazz for Kyle Korver? That would screw the West.
There has to be a way to reject ridiculous trades for the sake of the league.

That's the point of trades.

As a Lakers fan you would obviously be opposed to something like this.
But would you feel the same way if Lebron got traded to the Jazz and they had Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Lebron?

Get over it, once Kobe gets an All-Star caliber player everyone goes ****.
"Kobe can't win without Shaq" LMAO
What did the Raptors get for Vince Carter? NOTHING.
Get over it.

Hahahaaaaaa why not clone players and equalize every position with same players for fairness.

Nope, because it would be impossible to set parameters of what a fair trade is. If the two teams agree the deal is fair, then that's all that is needed.
The talent involved is only one factor in the trade. Teams may be willing to give up talent for luxury tax relief or opening up long-term salary cap space. If you're going to complain about the Gasol trade, would you also call shenanigans on Phoenix giving up Kurt Thomas and two 1sts to Seattle for a trade exception? You think teams won't be willing to complete seemingly lop-sided deals to open up cap space in the 2010 season when LeBron, Wade, and Bosh are free agents?

Pau didn't even make the all star team this year, he has never won a playoff game before going to the Lakers, he probably will never make an All NBA team how has he shifted the balance of power over the whole league.....

That's the point of trades.
The point of trades is for both teams to give up something to get something.
One team may be sacrificing youth for a vet. Or they may be sarificing one position for another.
When something is so blatantly one sided where one team doesn't even give up anything but receives a star player in return, that is not the "point of a trade"
You look at any playoff team and let them add another all-star in addition to the core they already have without giving up anything and that makes a ridiculously unnatural boost.
When it's someone young on top of that on a contending team that's young on top of that?
The rest of the league is screwed.

If the league can survive Knicks management stinking up their most important and valuable market, they can survive management silliness elsewhere.

It's ridiculous how much people get mad. Pau Gasol isn't a superstar, an d the lakers gave up an expiring contract, and a hell of a prospect, and their draft picks.
Memphis wanted to clear space, and tank.... get over it, It's nothing like LeBron getting moved to Utah....

As a none Laker fan, I cannot understand why people keep discussing the Gasol trade. Memphis wanted a large expiring and whatever other assets they could get (young players & picks). They got the biggest expiring contract available on the market (most important thing they were looking for), a prospect and a bunch of picks.
Why should other teams tell the Grizzlies how to run their franchise, they got what they were looking for.

I don't know why people act like this is the first trade where a team traded a player for cap relief.

The point is he's an all-star talent.
And being added to the Lakers is the equivalent of them poof out of nowhere developing an all-star to an already playoff team.
Such a move would have an absurd boost on any team. And the scary thing is they already may have that boost out of nowhere in Bynum
With Gasol on top of that, if the players can co-exist, they may be literally unbeatable when healthy.

At least wait for next year to cry. What if it was Bynum for Gasol? LA would have the exact same team on the floor right now and the trade would have been a major steal for the Grizz, so wait until LA is dominant next year to complain.
Plus the Grizz got over 10 mil in expiring deal plus a rookie PG and the right to Marc Gasol the starting Center of the world Champion Spain and new MVP of the Spanish league. 2 solid young prospect and around 12 mil in expiring money for a guy who was supposed to be an injury prone soft big who asked for a trade. I mean thats a much better return than what the Raps got for VC.

The point of the thread isn't necessarily to complain about that trade alone.
The point is it's a joke that Lebron to Utah could legally happen.
No way should such highway robbery be allowed.
You laugh at the idea of a fair trade clause but I don't think you are recognizing the implications it would have.
If the Cavs traded Lebron to the Jazz they could make a mockery out of the league.
3 players that are top 3 at their respective positions.
What a joke that something like that is legal.

In a couple of years when the Grizz have used their capspace, Crittenton turns into what he can be, and Marc Gasol is starting at Center for them (or some other team that they traded him to), people won't think of this as such a horrible trade for Memphis.
People forget how horribly Memphis was doing with Gasol.. It didn't even make much difference to their projected record when they traded him for Kwame+Critt+Gasol+2 1sts..
Vince Carter, Allen Iverson (was thought of as a steal for Denver at the time), Rasheed Wallace ring a bell to anyone?

So what?
People thought the Lakers were screwed when they traded O'Neal away. Looks pretty good for them now, eh? Never judge a trade after a half-season.
