how much longer can the Spurs compete?

I didn't start this thread because they lost. I am just really wondering how much longer they can seriously compete w/o old age getting in the way.

Put them with the Mavs and Suns. I think they're done winning championships.
But they'll still compete to be in the WCF next year.

They still be good for a lot longer. Its not like they don't have good players anymore. They just need to revamp there bench and maybe time to let Bruce Bowen come off the bench and look for a better offensive SF.

completely disagree with the "Mavs and Suns"..
we made the conference finals this year in a hard bracket..
we killed the Suns WITH this old team..we beat a young Hornets team with this old team..I don't see how the Spurs can possibly be placed on the same level as a team they just beat, even though the Spurs have cap room..
Duncan-Parker-Ginobili-Bowen is the core..Duncan is getting older, but he's still a top 5 player in the NBA..Parker continues to improve..Ginobili's injury obviously hurt him in these playoffs..Bowen is still one of the best defenders in the NBA, but will have to get a smaller amount of minutes next year..
the difference next year..there will hopefully be a young, athletic swingman starting at SG..there will be a legit backup PG..and there will be a big man to compliment Duncan with defense and rebounding..
the Spurs don't need big-time additions, the core is still good enough to win a championship..in case anybody didn't notice, the role players were the key, mainly the offensive droughts..a swingman and a PG adds more variety..Duncan will still be a top 5 player IMO, top 6-7 at worst..Parker will still be a top 5 PG..Manu will still be a top 5-7 SG in the NBA..Pop will still be a top 3 coach in the NBA..it's the role players..
another thing..WHICH team is better, other than LA?..NO is on the same level, but IMO they won't be CLEARLY better than a younger Spurs team..and to me, they're the only other team that is even in the discussion..Utah is good, but I don't think their core is good enough..Houston? it's hard to win when your 2 best players are always hurt..Dallas? no chance..Phoenix? no chance..Denver? LOL..Portland? not next year, and we don't know how Oden is going to turn out..Golden State? no reason to think they'll be better..
in the East..Boston? same boat..Detroit? same boat..

SPURS NEED TO UPGRADE
They almost lost to the Hornets. They need to move some players, keep the core of Duncan, Parker, Manu.
Get a better backup SG, get a starting SF, move Bowen to backup SF, and get another inside offensive player.

The Spurs are a smart, well run team. I think they'll be competing for a long time to come.
They have a great organization.

I think they still have 2-3 years left as a top contender, and wouldn't rule out another title at all. I think that's a respectable possibility.
Obviously there'll need to be various roster changes along the way, and that should be there with the management they have. Starting this off-season.
The Hornets, outside of improving their bench some and Wright developing, barring a serious addition - I'm just not that sold on the Hornets being right with the Lakers and the Spurs in the future. I think what they have to do is get another creative offensive player in the starting line-up on the perimete. Also that guy would need to be able to be their main wing defender. Until then, I think they're somewhat off from the Lakers/Spurs. Paul/West/Peja is not good enough as your core offensive guys, they need that 4th notable offensive threat. Will just have to see what they do.

As long as Tim Duncan is healthy and Greg Popovich is at the top of his game, this team will still contend... Parker and Manu are bargains so it would be safe to say they can spend the money on another free agent or chase a player via trade that can help them. Obviously, they need to get a little bit younger but not really to re-start all over again.
Just instill new blood (SF position would be the first to be addressed)..

thes spurs have 13+ million coming off the books. the 13 million includes finely, horry, and kurt thomas, our trio of old players. were in prime position to retool, were not the model franchise for no reason =).

They'll have to completely revamp their roster outside of the big 3 to contend for a title. Given their track record, I wouldn't put it past them to win one more. Ginobili is coming off of a career year, Parker is only 26, and Duncan is still very effective.

Unless they strike gold with a late draft pick, I think next year may be the end of their big run.
Too many young teams are getting better

We don't deserve to be lumped with the Mavs and Suns. Our system has produced titles.
As long as we address our youth movement, and Splitter is as good as advertised, we'll be fine.

You guys will be a step above the Suns and Mavs but I don't see you guys getting past the Lakers or Hornets again.

Spurs need major upgrades. Gone are the days of minor off-season tweaks. Until then they are done as contenders. Even this season they went to WCF (barely!) but losing 4-1 isn't "contending".

Well when you're winning championships you tend to make minor upgrades. They've got some young bigs coming in and the big 3 isn't really that old. They were a **** call and a Ginobili injury away from making the WCF more interesting.

If Bynum comes back healthy, I really don't see any competition for the Lakers the next season. Maybe the Hornets, but not very many teams match up well against their roster. Somebody would have to strike gold in the draft, or get a Pau Gasol type freebie trade.

Every single year the Spurs lose, all the pundits and supposed 'geniuses' (aka, idiots), come out and state how the Spurs are too old, and they're done.
Some of the basketball writers out there are no better than fans. They're incredibly impulsive, and have no perspective at all.
Duncan = 32
Ginobili = 30
Parker = 27
How the hell is this team finished? All they have to do is get rid of the dinosaurs on their bench, and they'll be right back in the thick of things.

well they need to just add different peices that are younger, more explosive and add some offense but keep guys like thomas, udoka, bowen and oberto and maybe add a nice 2 gaurd that can score either off the bench for ginobili or start but come out for ginobili. their bench needs some more revamping as well.
