Is LeBron James the biggest star in the NBA?

Post#1 » by DowJones » Fri May 30, 2008 7:59 am

It is either Bron or Kobe. Who is more marketable and which player just has more charisma. Which player would the league want to be the face of the NBA?

I am talking about star, not overall basketball player. I see LeBron on the covers of Forbes and Vogue...2 magazines that are complete opposites and have nothing to do with sports at all. Then I see Kobe hanging out with the guys from Jackass. I have to tell you...it doesn't seem like a contest.

The NBA's biggest star has been the same man ever since Jordan retired - Shaquille O'Neal.

He's not what he once was, but at his peak he's still a house-hold name. And at his peak, he was everywhere; movies, music, video games, tons of commercials.

The NBA/David Stern and ESPN have been pushing LeBron but TV ratings, jersey sales, and just simple discussion I've seen as a fan in almost every venue were sports are being discussed favors Kobe. He's fallen off alot because of the rape allegations but he is still the guy who people wanna watch either to root for him or against him. LeBron has a more apathetic following while with Kobe its either excessive hate or love.

Probably Lebron. Though if you show the average person who doesnt watch sports a picture of lebron. They have no idea who he is.

I would say Kobe and Shaq are still the biggest names for an average Joe...

Kobe is the best player in the NBA.

LeBron is the best athlete, but Kobe is a much better player.

He's a better defender, better shooter, and just an all around smoother player.

Not to mention, Kobe is a better public speaker and more charismatic. It's not even close. Kobe is the biggest 'Star' in the league hands down.

The reason Jordan is generally regarded as the best player ever is because of marketabilty and not necessarily because of his play. His play and his achievements put him in the GOAT discussion with Magic, Kareem, Wilt and so on, but his marketabilty is what ultimatelt seperates him.

Everyone knows Jordan, everywhere...He is basketball.

Kobe will never be as influential as Jordan. Kobe is not even as influential as Lebron is.

Lebron is by far the most influential player in the NBA nowadays. If he can keep his statistical output up and win some titles down the line, he'll easily surpass guys like Bird, Magic, Kareem and Wilt as the GOAT in the public's perception and it'll come down between him and MJ who is the GOAT.

I thought it was proven last year that Lebron really didnt have that much star power as most us thought when he pulled in one of the worst finals rating in nba history. and it wasnt all the spurs fault, they played in plenty of finals but never had ratings that low.

Shaq is probably the biggest household name IMO..a lot of people even relate the word huge with Shaq when describing somebody or giving nicknames..

Lebron is too young right now..Kobe has a risky history..

Biggest Star - LeBron

Best Player - Kobe, but that's arguable as you can make a good case for LeBron.
