I would say assist because if u handle the ball a lot u can slip and fall into atleast 5 of those

Well you're wrong about assists, I would say steals or shot blocking.

Tyson Chandler doesn't get a lot of blocked shots but is a great intimidator, and Amare Stoudamire gets a lot of blocked shots but is a crap defender.

Steals. People say a guy is a great defender because he steals the ball. When in reality, it's mostly just playing passing lanes. Some guys though, like Chris Paul actually rip the ball away.

steals and blocked shots. Being good at either doesn't necessarily mean you're a good defender.

It used to be blocks and steals. On the boxscore now, it's +/-.

Probably Points Per Game (PPG) or PER.

PER has become the stat for ranking players.

That's an underrated aspect of defense.

PPG. Unless it's being analyzed in conjuction with FG% and FGA it doesn't tell you a whole lot.

rebounds and assists

My first thought was steals. Apparently thats not an unoriginal thought.

Managing to pick off a couple each game is indicative of little more than a good eye and good timing. It is hardly indicative of stellar defense.

It's more gambling then anything.

I believe it has more to do with reading the opponent's offense and making educated predictions.

But on its own it doesn't tell you much.If you get 3 steals a game playing the lanes but get beaten 8 times a game trying it leading to lay ups you are a terrible defender. The stat doesn't really tell you anything of use.

Assists, easily.
The way they're counted
The players around a point guard
How much the point guard has control of the ball
The effect on possessions

The way assists are counted is horrible, especially with Chris Paul, Steve Nash, and almost all the other high assist players. Guys can dribble after getting the ball and they'll still get the assists.
