they were joking abuot the legal issue of the "medicine" and joked about the term medicine and referred to as shots.

horse is slang for heroin. i dunno if that's what they were talking about though. I don't think there is any benefits of being junkied out on heroin while playing basketball.

Theyre referring to the fact that Horses get injections/shots prior to running races that alleviates the pain they feel from whatever injury theyre suffering from.. and lets them perform as if theyre 100%(but risking further injury).
The joke was that players must do that as well, as they often collapse as if theyve been shot during a particular game, then perform to the best of their abilities in the succeeding matches
