My ideas

1. As much as I hate the instant replay, I have to say it is a must for today's NBA, instant replay will only be activated in last 3 mins of game

2. Refs tracking rules------ background check every single year, offer contracts that including the tracking rules, like how FBI tracking your ass off, every credit card transaction, social security number, phone bills, internet......... you have to sign the contract to be the ref of NBA

3. If it's too controversy and was a clear error by refs, re-game is a possibility.

4. Mistake limit rules---- If refs is making too many mistake calls, he/she would get a fine, it is stackable, after a number of game that involves in her/his mistakes, she/he would receive automatic suspension.

There needs to be a third party monitoring referees and having full and sole discretion on handing out fines and reprimands. And referees need to call less in general, who wants to see a game marred with excessive foul calls anyways? Of course, I thought this should happen before this scandal because watching the NBA has become more and more grueling for me. I love the game, but I hate the impact referees have. I'm sick of touch fouls and flops and superstar calls and rookie no-calls and all the other BS people write off as "part of the game."

1.I like coaching challenges better than instant replays and even then, a call is objectionable. You can call a foul a block or charge both ways.

2. If the refs have to be monitored like that, I don't think there will be a lot of people wanting to ref. I know I wouldn't want my personal life being tracked everywhere and everything I do for 35 years if I work as a ref for that long. I mean, you're being tracked 24/7 for half of your life... I wouldn't do it unless I am getting paid a ridiculous amount of money. Also, it takes so much resource to track that many refs that close. The NBA would probably have to set up a whole agency just to do that.

3.Half of the calls made by refs are questionable. We'd have to replay every damn game and replay the replayed games.

4.I don't think the refs should get fined for making bad calls. That just puts so much pressure on them.

For me, personally, I'd like the NBA to come up with clear standards of what is a foul and what is a correct call. A lot of people are still confused about what is a foul. For example, sometimes a defensive player goes straight up to contest the shot but gets called for a foul half of the time. Get it right. Is it a foul if the player goes straight up or not? The charge/block call is way too inconsistent.

The NBA needs to make the rules EXTREMELY clear to the referees and should release all the rules to the public. They need to make sure no referee has a personal preference on how he/she wants to call a game. Some refs will allow physical play and some won't. Train the refs so that they will make the same call at least 90% of the time.

Just look at FIBA refs. You wouldn't say any of the games played during last summer was rigged. They were all called the way it was and it was much much more consistent than an NBA game.

I would:

1. Do away with the owners association - collusion anyone?
2. A new commissioner - to signify a new beginning. New anti-rigging , anti-corruption, anti-collusion rules with stiff penalties.
3. Overhaul of playoff format, 7 games is too long, all it is is milking for money. Playoffs take too long.
4. Remove all caps, allow teams who pay most to sign best players. This one might be a little too revolutionary for now, so maybe not yet.
5. Expand league to Europe/Asia to grow the market, while changing the schedule so that less games are played between each team, to allow for travel time and more rest. Maybe 50-65 games per year. If the market grows, teams will make same or even more profit even while playing less games.

Wtf? Why? Small market teams wouldn't exist then. You want this to turn into baseball? It would basically be a race to the title between Lakers, Boston, New York and Chicago every year. BORING.

Because caps are used to maintain mediocrity and preserve the status quo. The only way for a "small" team to become good in this league is to get really lucky with draft picks(or get some rigged playoff series :D). If the owners have the money to invest, why not let them?

completely get rid of fines for challenging a game's integrity.
set up third party to train, hire and monitor referees.
eliminate the lottery.

Only the 17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26 team going to get the lottery opportunities. all of those 10 teams has 10% of chances to get the top 3 picks. 30th will only offered the 4th overall pick every single year. 29th 5th, etc.

This stops the tanking issue and make non-playoffs team more interesting to watch.

I'd rather not do that. tanking will be an issue no matter what, but you can't have a team that was legitimately bad be punished for it. I'd rather just let the worst get the first. My desire to get rid of lottery isn't based on tanking, it's based on the desire to get rid of unnecessary nonsense the league does for no apparent reason.

The only rule should be enforced when team(s) intentionally tanked their season their lottery should be taken away. At least they won't tank so apparently.

Nice thread. I think this should be a sticky.

I don't have one specific idea, but I would just like the league to be more transparent. There is too much that goes behind closed doors that the fans/media need to see.

That, and add more consistency to calling fouls. Do away with the star calls.

expecting the league to do anything about the refs is laughable. They wil only act when a charge is proven. They will not just go out and replace refs that work in the leagues best interest.

Just consider if what Donaghy says is true, than why would the league bring in new refs who wouldnt follow the leagues "best interests"? Stern has his henchmen to call games how he sees fits, or in which ever way Stern feels is in the leagues best interest. Why would he or the league change that without any ironclad proof?

so how exactly do non-playoff teams get better? Teams like the Clippers, Knicks, Sonics etc. have been in the lottery for years. Take away those top draft picks and those teams are in even worse position then they're in now. It would make the league entirely too lopsided.
