After nearly a year and a half of rehabilitation, Clippers point guard Shaun Livingston has been medically cleared for basketball-related activities. Livingston, 22, has played two games of one-on-one this past week and his seriously injured left knee has improved to the point where is now dunking. The odds of him being cleared to play in the Las Vegas summer league, however, remain small. Livingston injured the knee Feb. 26, 2007, in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats.
Livingston will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if the Clippers do not offer him a salary starting at $5.8 million. The team is still waiting to see how he progresses before making the decision, but will probably attempt to resign him at a lesser price.
With the clippers being non committal with his contract situation, what do you think happens and do you think he can still play?

the clippers aren't all that non-committal. 5.8 is simply way too much money for livingston. i'm sure they want him back and the right price, 5.8 not being the right price.

Clippers guard Shaun Livingston is set to become an unrestricted free agent with the Clippers declining to tender him a qualifying offer, the New York Daily News is reporting.
Livingston is still rehabilitating from a devastating knee injury, and may be too much of a medical risk for a team that is hoping to add a starting-caliber point guard.

No team will offer him a significant amount, despite his mountains of unfulfilled potential.
Very sad he can't stay healthy. I expect him to be signed for around 2 million/year somewhere, and have a Jonathan Bender-esque early retirement in a few years.

I predict the Clippes will retain him close to a third of the price it would have cost had the Clippers exercised his QO.

True, he's not worth a qualifying offer this early after his injury, but damn this guy is only 22 years old! He deserves a chance from some team. I just hope he doesn't become the next Jay Williams....

Both the Jay Williams and Darius Miles comparisons don't fit. Jay Williams injured himself riding his motorcycle (maybe even recklessly?) and risking his NBA career doing so, and ended hurting himself pretty bad and losing out on his NBA career. Darius Miles became a 19ppg scorer with a huge contract and the ability to turn the locker room into a cancer, then got injured and no one cared for him because of his attitude. Shaun Livingston played basketball, was very young, had TONS of potential but he injured his knee very badly playing the game, for the Clippers, driving to the hoop and breaking his knee due to a freak injury.
Nope, not the same.

I'd be surprised if anyone offered him more than the LLE. It just doesn't make sense to spend any more than that when:
1. He has yet to prove he even belongs in the league.
2. He absolutely destroyed his knee. Teams aren't going to commit money to him unless they feel his knee can hold up to the rigors of the NBA.
My guess is the best offer he'll get will be around the LLE for 3 seasons, with a team option at least on the 3rd season, if not both the 2nd and 3rd seasons. This way a team gets his Bird rights if he shows he is able to play or they can cut him if he can't.

if he has any resemblance of his previous ability left, I would like to see Orlando go after him...however, I would assume that LA would see that and make the better offer to him...or maybe not...

No team in their right mind would give him $5+ million right now. I think he'll show up to the Clippers' summer league and they'll go from there. Even now over a year after his surgery some writers are saying there's a small chance he'll even be ready for the summer league. If he can show that he's on the right track I think the Clippers will offer him something reasonable.

He will probably get a one year deal, maybe at the min or the LLE, he'll then play for a bigger longer contract next year. I don't see anyone offering him big money since he hasn't proved he is healthy. I cannot see him expecting a deal longer than one year or team options because if he is healthy he can get more next year.

You are correct sir. Took me a while to think of someone and the closes I could think of a young talent that just had bad luck with injuries that prevented him from reaching his potential . . .
Jonathan Bender
I wish him the best but tearing every ligament in your knee at once is going to effect your game. Hopefully he will over come it.

I would love to see him on the Kings. A duo of Martin and Livingston would be sick.

It would also make my avatar make more sense.
