ESPN.com columnist Jemele Hill was suspended yesterday after sparking outrage by comparing rooting for the Boston Celtics [team stats] to Adolf Hitler and nuclear war.

“Jemele has been relieved of her writing and on-air responsibilities for a period of time to reflect on the impact of her words,” ESPN spokesman Paul Melvin said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.

they want writers to be attention grabbing and obnoxious (see Stephen A Smith), but then when they slip and go to far...

I'm sure she didn't really mean that the Celtics embody the hate of Hitler or the destructive power of a Nuclear bomb :banghead:

I think this was an overreaction. But really I think she was reprimanded because she was so adamant about Imus being fired for the "nappy headed hoes" comment. Don't get me wrong. I find her very annoying anytime the subject is the Pistons, but her comments didn't deserve a suspension.

Her bosses called it “a breakdown in the system of editorial checks and balances,” but Jemele Hill wouldn’t have needed that monitoring if she’d known Eric.

In trying to infuse her NBA coverage with loathing of the Celtics [team stats], the ESPN.com columnist abandoned all restraint by suggesting that rooting for the Shamrocks “was like saying Hitler was a victim,” whatever that’s supposed to mean.

Yesterday, Hill amplified on her earlier apology for writing, “Rooting for the Celtics is like saying Hitler was a victim. It’s like hoping Gorbachev would get to the blinking red button before Reagan.”

Not a sexist at all, but what is the deal with these women reporters in sports lately simply saying the stupidest things you can say...

Lemele Hill compares the Celtics to Hitler
Dana Jacobsen said **** Jesus
Then there was that golf lady who said the other PGA players wanted to take Tiger out and lynch him?

Give me a freaking break, these ladies trying to break down the sex barrier in sports, then they **** it up like that. They should know they are walking on eggshells as it is as women in a male dominated media, and then to say stupid things like that ESPECIALLY after the other women have said stupid things.

Grow up and be smarter.

I thought she was going to be suspended for excessive slurping of Kobe's testicles or promoting Kobe to an unearned level (she wrote the article claiming he is better than Jordan) only having him disappoint in the Finals.

Anyways, I wouldn't have suspended her, but I see where they're coming from.

I actually thinks she's pretty cool from her time on 1st and 10 with Skip.

If a person can't, most of ESPN as well as at least half of sports columnists would lose the title. Heck, half of columnists in every genre wouldn't be able to be called journalists.

She's a joke, she should have been turfed for bringing nothing to her articles. I could find better posts on any decent forum.

Um, she's a columnist. Those aren't meant to be "unbiased", in fact columns are by design a mouthpiece for the writer's opinions.

What goes around comes around.
She was indignant over Imus's comment so she has to take a hit with her Hitler comment.

I can understand how a second-rate writer could think that comment was alright, but how did that get past the editor?
