Last one was funny enough Boston in 86 under KC Jones..
That is a long time between drinks isnt it..?
Avery did come close but just found it interesting considering the strong african-american influence on the game..

Well, to be fair, only 7 different coaches won titles in those 22 years. Phil Jackson (X9), Pat Riley (X3), Greg Popovich (X4), Rudy Tomjanovic (X2), Chuck Daly (X2), and Larry Brown.

A poke a dot (Please Use More Appropriate Word) Dolphin could of won a ring with that team. That is the dumbest stat ever. I'm black btw and it's still dumb, it wasn't a first and race has nothing to do with being a good coach...wtf???? Why even mention it, we are past that.
ps- that wasn't a shot at the OP but whatever media outlet reported it.

It has been 35 years ago since a Jew (Red Holzman) won the NBA championship. I smell an anti Jewish consipiracy. Where is the Mossad when you need them?

yea, and hes probably the worst coach in nba history to have won one, if he would have made kg stay on the block instead of shooting 18 foot jumpers the whole playoffs he could have won a lot faster

Well yeah, but...so? Race shouldn't have to matter. I'm all about talent.

Dude, he isn't the worst coach in NBA History to have won one; there's no such thing considering he WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP! I actually believe he's a good coach. Listening in to the Wired Conversations, he spouts the stuff players actually want to hear. Great speaker. Who cares if he could have won it faster?!? The fact of the matter is that he WON it. That's it.
Stop hating.

6 Celtics head coaches have won championships. 3 were white (Auerbach, Heinsohn, Fitch); 3 were black (Russell, Jones, Rivers). 3 were former Celtics players; 1 was a non-Celtic former player; 2 never were NBA players at all.
I think those stats should suffice to put ANY thoughts of Celtics institutionalized prejudice to rest.
Otherwise, I don't think they're particularly significant.

That said, we can't judge the basketball world to be wholly color blind until there are successful blacks OTHER than former NBA players. A significant fraction of coaches are college players who weren't good enough for the pros. When more of the blacks in that group make it big as coaches, THEN the game will we entitled to pat itself on the back.

It's insignificance is significant.

What this shows is that a mediocre coach can win a championship.
Let me qualify that. Rivers is worse than mediocre as a tactician. His rotations are incomprehensible.
But he had two great strengths: (1) he let Tom Thobodeau orchestrate the defense and didn't interfere, and (2) he's a genuinely nice guy and his players want to win for him. I haven't seen a team more motivated to win since Jordan's Bulls.

My question to everyone is when does a mediocre coach become a good coach and how do tell? ie what measure do you apply to it?

Where does McHales incompetence end and Ainge/Rivers talent begin? Doesn't matter. The organization won a championship.

honestly who cares. I'm not racist, but every time a black person does something are we gona say "the first black person to _____" or "the first black person to do _____ since ____"
