And that's the end of the Juan Carlos Navarro story
Time flies doesn't it? Last summer, most every team in the league would've taken Navarro for free off the Spurs hands, and Memphis ended up being the lucky party. Navarro wanted to play with his fellow Spaniard, Pau, and that factored pretty major into his decision. Then a few months later, Pau is traded to the Lakers and Juan is left to sulk in Memphis. Instead of begging the Lakers to let Juan be Pau's locker boy, he has decided to take a large offer from Euro team, Barcelona.
Navarro Takes Huge Contract With Barcelona
Jun 19, 2008 12:16 PM EST
Juan Carlos Navarro, who earned $538,000 with the Grizzlies last season, was swayed by a deal from FC Barcelona that will pay him between $20 million and $24 million over the next four years.
Wasn't this guy supposed to turn into a stud PG in the nba?

so basically hes getting paid over 30 mil converted US dollars for 4 years with free accomodation, utilities, food etc. to stay home, no wonder Stern is **** his pants concerning the rising Euro and the expanding popularity of Euroleague basketball, I mean how many marginal NBA players can turn down that salary.

For the record, he came from the Wizards organization, not the Spurs.

Add another to the list of cautionary tales of "he's the best player in Europe!!111!!11!" and other dubious titles. I heard similar projections for guys like Sarunas Jasikevicius and Vassilis Spanoulis, and look where they are now. I always roll my eyes a little when hearing similar epithets applied to Rudy Fernandez and Marc Gasol...sure, every player is different, and those guys could become legit forces here. But let's not take success in Europe as a guarantee of ANYthing.

I hate when players leave after one year. Maybe he let because Gasol was traded.

Re: And that's the end of the Juan Carlos Navarro story
He hasn't been really *that* bad as a rookie, for sure not worse than Calderon.
To me he'd have eventually made it, but very few people can accept regressing so much in money and role for several years to achieve it.

Re: And that's the end of the Juan Carlos Navarro story
Nobody said that he was going to be the next stud PG. In fact, in Europe, he doesn't even play PG. He's an amazing scorer of the bench, he can hit the 3 with the best (don't get fooled by the 37%, the last games he was just gunning for the Kittler rookie-record and finished the season with a 4/14 from three against Denver and some other bad games) and he has a special knack for the back-breaking three to ice it. It's hard y'all can't appreciate those shots because of MEM being such an awful team. He's a Ginobili without the defense, but at least he tries, and has the bball IQ, so even thought he's still a bad defender, he's underated. Every team in the League could use a player like that of the bench, IMO he's waaaaaaaaay better and more dependable than "Rusty Machine", too bad that coaches don't trust him enough.
And well, you know, like someone said he had a better rookie year than Calderon... he's not a bad player, huh?
And it's not all about money, he didn't even listened the offers, it's about his family, about his loneliness in Memphis and because a player like that can't waste his prime coming of the bench from Memphis.
Okay, that being said, Gallinari is a BUST

I would take that deal too and I've never been to Europe in my life. Would I rather get paid 500K or 5 million to play basketball?
I'll take the security any day.

Memphis Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace released the following statement today on Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro, who rejoined F.C. Barcelona after completing his rookie NBA season with the Grizzlies in 2007-08. “Juan Carlos Navarro has decided to rejoin his former team, F.C. Barcelona,” said Wallace. “As of late Tuesday, Juan Carlos’ intention was to test the NBA free agent waters come July. However, on Wednesday he received the proverbial offer he could not refuse from his old team. We plan on extending a qualifying offer to Juan Carlos so that the Grizzlies retain the right to match any future offer if he ever decides to return to the NBA. “Juan Carlos made a positive contribution to the team and we wish him and his family all the best in his return to his homeland.”

He was actually pretty good when you compare him to the other rookies. I don't know why people are putting him down. Amongst rookies, the only guys to average more were Durant and Thornton. If you expected him to average 20, yeah sure he's a disappointment, but if you expected him to have a rookie season, he did a good job.

Thornton will take his place in the rookie-sophomore challenge next year.
He should have made it this year.
